Can the troops switch side?
At least, in an ukrainian centered scenario it would be an essential feature, as makhnovists stole many ennemy regiments (mainly Reds, Grigoriev(white?), and Greens), or demobilized them (Reds, maybe few Whites).
In the end, Reds had to send non-russian and non-ukrainian speaking troops, or uninformed troops from very-afar, or heavily guarded tcheka regiments*1, against makhnovists.
Even with these red tricks, the 50vs1 ratio became 7vs1! with the red joining black, and red deserting troops *2. Each day and night it was finally localy 5vs1 until the end of makhnovtchina.
Red propaganda too was important, if backed with Tcheka...
Even, Red propaganda lies unintentionnaly gave a far lost makhnovist troop to the Whites for some times! Something the Whites never succeded by themselves!
White propaganda would only be effective on few Greens, or just for a few time.
*1 In the end against makhnovists, Tcheka was not in red regiments (they would be shot by makhnovists), but just behind the battles to catch deserters and put them back to battle. Tcheka did not shot those deserters (maybe a few to keep the terror) as they were too numerous!
*2 After the fall of Whites, makhnovists fighters were just 3 000 against a 150 000 reds army chasing them (Archinov count). Less than 10% deserters joined the blacks. So the joining reds could have been 6000 (tripling the blacks) and actual deserters a huge 81000??? Makhnovists should have been 3000+6000 against 150000-6000-81000:
9000 against 63000
I imagined and calculate these round numbers from what I read.
Edit: In 'deserters', I include prisonners who very often surrendered easily to the makhnovists.
