There is a list on the Jackson's Gamers website:marcusjm wrote:I recently watched The Admiral, it was a fairly good piece on the Civil War. The TV-series is much better I understand. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1101026/
Reds is also good but less focused on the battles obviously, still a real classic. Stellar cast with some of the best movie actors on the Planet. There is also one Polish movie about that war but I forgot the title.
Riley was an excellent British TV-series that captured the espionage section of this war very well and the general mood in the country.
Anything else?

"Hunt for red october" by Sean Connery as a very charismatic Russian captain. But that film has an Incredible music.
Generally Russians have very good music also before the revolution, composed with strong feelings and passion.

I read a good book on the mutiny and the 1905 revolution a couple of years ago: Bascomb, Neal. Red Mutiny: Eleven Fateful Days on the Battleship Potemkin. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2007.

Going into Japan war, we had large navy that was 'advanced' if the year was 1890. Sailors were badly trained and taken care for, paid poor, and ships were kept in poor repair. The stupidity of sending Baltic Fleet around the world straight into battle combined with being badly taken care of gave sailors impression government not care about them. Black Sea Fleet was only fleet not destroyed and sailors thought since it is apparent government cares not about us, they would be sent to Pacific to die. The treatment of navy is why sailors were such big part of revolutionary movement.

I have seen Eisensteins 'October' the 1927 film and that glorifies the revolution, after all it was made to commemorate the anniversary. What do you think about leaders such as Trotsky? He was hounded out of Russia for not supporting Stalin and the direction he was leading the country into. He was also later killed by a Stalinist agent in Mexico with an icepick in his head. What are you views?

, I can never condone the murder of the tsar and family.

Russia with bolsheviks (state capitalism), USA with usual capitalism (IWW fighting against fascism in USA), and many others.
They all enslave the people in factories to the profit of few.
Then you shouldn't condone the tsar for the murder of many people killed for nothing under its law. In some way he paid with the same justice ways he had.

Though I understand why the Bolsheviks felt it must be done, I can never condone the murder of the tsar and family. It should tell you how wrong it was when Red Russians even refused to do it, Bulgarians had to be used. Not even Red Russian peasants would kill Romanov family.
