I recently watched The Admiral, it was a fairly good piece on the Civil War. The TV-series is much better I understand. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1101026/

Reds is also good but less focused on the battles obviously, still a real classic. Stellar cast with some of the best movie actors on the Planet. There is also one Polish movie about that war but I forgot the title.

Riley was an excellent British TV-series that captured the espionage section of this war very well and the general mood in the country.

"Hunt for red october" by Sean Connery as a very charismatic Russian captain. But that film has an Incredible music.

Generally Russians have very good music also before the revolution, composed with strong feelings and passion.

Not really a movie, but this song can easily be linked to the period (if you forget the reference to the "fascist pigs" at the end, and if you are not picky with the use of "Soviet Union" pre-1922 ). I also believe it is extremely powerful ! (and yes, it is part of a Soviet MUSICAL film - they existed).

I read a good book on the mutiny and the 1905 revolution a couple of years ago: Bascomb, Neal. Red Mutiny: Eleven Fateful Days on the Battleship Potemkin. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2007.

Going into Japan war, we had large navy that was 'advanced' if the year was 1890. Sailors were badly trained and taken care for, paid poor, and ships were kept in poor repair. The stupidity of sending Baltic Fleet around the world straight into battle combined with being badly taken care of gave sailors impression government not care about them. Black Sea Fleet was only fleet not destroyed and sailors thought since it is apparent government cares not about us, they would be sent to Pacific to die. The treatment of navy is why sailors were such big part of revolutionary movement.

The importance of Aurora in revolution is more propaganda than reality. The deeds were greatly exaggerated by propaganda ministers to create a symbol. The assault on Winter Palace was not resisted, there are films and paintings to recreate it with Bolsheviks storming in attacking Cossak defenders. In reality a small mob of revolutionaries broke in help entrance (not located on Plaace Square) then got lost in the building before finding last provisional government people left, then forced them to write arrest papers for themselves because most Bolsheviks were workers and could not read.

A few Aurora sailors came in front later and took provisional government people into coustidy. A far cry from the films and tales told in later years. But one of my best favorite Soviet songs was written because of it.

He is a "artistic" musician. Weird guy that thinks he is more important than he is.

It is hard for me to have opinion on Bolsheviks. So much I learned was embellishment as child, then in the 90th there was complete reversal and only told bad things. Only in the last years has a true sense of them been available. I feel that while they did some bad things they at first were truly trying to help Russian people. But soon it became apparent they had no ability to put their plans into being, they were not educated or experienced in running government. Stalin knew this and knew sadly they only way for them to eventually make the country they wanted was to be tyrant.

This was only thing Russian (and others that were in Russian Empire) really knew, it was only way to build industrial sektors. A lot of people died and suffered, but because of this we we able to beat fascists and become one of the countries the world had to listen to when we spoke.

It is hard to judge these people. They did many horrible things, but did just as many good things that helped people live better lives, even today. Even some of the horrible things ended in being good for people in the end. It is a great paradox so it makes it hard to judge.

Though I understand why the Bolsheviks felt it must be done, I can never condone the murder of the tsar and family. It should tell you how wrong it was when Red Russians even refused to do it, Bulgarians had to be used. Not even Red Russian peasants would kill Romanov family.

Trotsky indirectly suicided: He died by the dictatorship he enforced. Many bolsheviks died in purges: one day they were the executioner, another day they were the executed.
Trotsky was aware about this: In 1905 he wrote that this communism would be the dictatorship of only one man (Bakunin wrote this 30 years before him).

I don't want get in discussion about politics, but terms like 'enslaving people in factories' is much hyperbole.

I never condone bad things, done by monarchy, though what sins did Olga, Tatiana, Alexi, and Anastasia commit that called for death? Especially at the hands of the men ordering the red terror?

It was bad time due to a lot of factors, and even today because of years of propaganda and embellishment it is hard to really know all the true realities. Foreign 'revolutionary' minded people seem to hero worship many of Bolshevik leaders and talking bad of the monarchy when ignoring or being ignorant to the Red atrocities. Many not willing to accept the evil they did. At least now in Russia we are finally starting to be able to strike a balance between both the good and bad that came from october revolution.

a)indulization under stalin goes very wron, not only due to dying of people due to stavation (food was sold for mony for building of industry), but due to heading of industialization (military build up), and not to create machinery for another industrialization and/or to help peoples for better lives.

b) if stalin didnt allied wit nazi first, he didnt need to fight with them later

c) I allways thought that reds killed tzar, info that was bulgarians was very new to me, and hard to belive.

IMHO "Quiet Flows the Don" is much better in its earlier, Soviet, version (1958, 3 parts). First, actors are much more authentic to Don cossacs of that period, than in later version. Second, the topic of RCW is shown better (in later version love story is more important).

"Quiet flows the Don" from the 50's is best version. It's all on youtube, subtitled in English.

Probably one of the very best RCW-films made is "The Red and the White", a Hungarian film from the 1960s.
