Forts/Bombadment/regions

Mon Jan 05, 2009 4:27 am

Ok, PBEM I am south. My opponent built a fort in Beaumont texas. I try and send some ironclads up to Milam, via Sabine river estuary. They get bombarded and destroyed.

My understanding was that Beaumont borders Sabine Confluent. So I thought sailing that way I would actually miss the fort.

So do forts bombard which regions?
All regions/rivers adjacent? or just the adjoining water area to the port?

Part 2 of this situation.

If a force with arty is in a region (no town or port) do they still bombard passing fleets? As I had several mortars opposite Beaumont but they failed to bombard the Union fleets, (maybe I failed they evasion/interdiction roll?)

Part 3
As my opponent points out. there is an irony here in that I shipped a division up the same route as the ironclads previously and nothing happened. This is when the Union had 2 fleets in Beaumont !

Anyone know the answers to these questions?

For land stacks outside of forts to be able to bombard passing ships they need to dig in. You also need do have artillery with a certain range, but I imagine mortars should belong to that category.

Also, stacks can toggled between bombarding and not bombarding, though I don't remember what the default.

Which posture did the Union fleets have? I'm fairly sure they have to be set to "offensive" to engage enemies passing by.

Sabine River Estuary does in fact share a "double" adjacency with Beaumont, TX, so yes you would be bombarded for passing thru that region if a fort were constructed there.

So the regions port access doesn't even come into it?

Rafiki,

If I knew that I would have held the junction position. But seeing some ships pass by unimpeded I decided to up stakes and bolt fearing being cut off.

Posture of the fleets, I don't know , would have to ask my opponent but I suspect passive.

Anyway thanks to you and Gray. It is always annoying when you do the wrong thing in a game based on a misunderstanding or lack of knowledge of the rules.

I just accidently sacked Beauregard from army commander by stacking him with Lee's army. Cost me 10 morale points and 600 victory points :bonk:
For a stupid mistake it will probably cost me a game :bonk:

Indeed. Heavens knows I've been there and done that :bonk:

Double adjacency?

Is there a list of doubly adjacent regions? Are the double adjacent regions all water regions? Should we assume that a fort can fire on adjacent water regions plus the water region adjacent to that?

I didn't know what it was called, but I sure learned about it during the PBEM Tournament (not a good time to learn things). I sent a force via boat to threaten St. Louis (Fort St. Louis). I went through Kaskaskia Confluent to land, and since St. Louis Harbor doesn't access Kaskaskia, I thought my guys would be safe. Oops. The fort bombarded my embarked troops, almost wiping out the force.
