CSA Naval Promotions

Has anyone been able to obtain a promotion for Buchanan or Semmes of the CSA Navy?

I haven't, but then again they are pretty inactive for me. Unless I get the British and French fleets then they become really active.

I do not think there are naval promotions in this game, since a naval commander can (as far as I know) command as many ships as he likes in his "fleet".

Even on the Union side I do not think this is possible.

Someone please feel free to correct me if I am mistaken.

There are naval promotions; a couple of the Union admirals (in the Apr '61 campaign, at least) are ready to be promoted as soon as they appear on the map

Which as much as I have grown to love this game (at least in PBEM format) I find quite daft (grumpy old man again) apy:

Why the heck these two commanders are not automatically promoted at the start of the campaign I'll never understand...or agree with the logic of leaving them to be promoted by players.

Have been wondering about this myself.

The only thing I can think of that might be even remotely relevant, is that if you play with random leaders, there is a chance they won't have the needed seniority to be promoted, and you have to let them remain at the rank they enter as.

Since ships don't form corps and divisions (maybe they will do something along those lines in AACW2) ... what's the point? Naval promotions are a flavor issue right now.

Straying into lesser known waters of my AACW know-how, but don't admirals suffer command penalties? The main difference to land generals being that admirals are always active?

No CPs used for boats. Some US 1-star admirals (notably Foote & Porter) can command land troops if they aren't promoted, but they get no CPs. Due to their high stats, they can make good early division commanders if teamed with a 2-star (like Grant).

Its stil damned daft Jabber that two Union commanders are instantly promotable at startup in the 61 campaign but its up to the player to promote them...unbelievable..truely unbelievable.

To my recollection, there is no command penalties for Admirals.

In all my games I only managed to have Porter promoted once. He defeated a French squadron near Norfolk.

It's relevant if you have two naval commanders set to merge and there happens to be a battle when they do.

I.E. Right now I'm jockeying for position in the Cumberland and Tennessee. We both have forts, so the blockade-running trait is helpful. You can move the ships past strong points with Semmes/Farragut for repair and relief operations, while Buc and Porter/Foote are stationary.
