Repairing Railroads

Sat Nov 17, 2007 9:24 pm

Hi everybody. I'm still trying to learn this game, so this may be a stupid question. However, I did a search and couldn't find an answer, so here goes: Often when I try to repair a railroad, it apparantly doesn't work. The railroad is still damaged on the next turn. I have plenty of ws, so that shouldn't be a problem (the only cost is 3 ws, right? No other resources?). Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong? It's kind of annoying having a brigade waiting around for several turns, in the hopes that this turn they'll succeed in repairing the railroad.

Thanks in advance. :)

I actually didn't even know u needed 3WS to repair it, but yes happens that sometimes the repairing job doesn't do in a single turn. It may depend to a random % factor (simulating the extent of the damages).

I'm sure some guru will clear this mistery :)

I read somewhere (the wiki or the manual, I think) that it takes 10 days to repair a railroad, 5 with engineers, so if that's true, it shouldn't be possible to spend more than one turn repairing it. Unless of course some bastard comes along and destroys it again during that same turn (edit: which shouldn't be possible, afaik).

And that's another thing: as far as I understand, it takes 0 days to destroy a railroad, which means that even if you have a massive army in a region, a single enemy brigade can destroy the railroad in that region before you can engage them (provided they start their turn, in the same region, of course). Of course, if they're irregulars, this might be slightly realistic, but otherwise it seems rather absurd. Recently my Army of Mississipi crushed some union corps in Muhlenburg, and for some reason the battered remains didn't retreat out of the region. They did that on day 1 of the next turn, but they managed to destroy the railroad (that I'd just repaired) before leaving. How did they manage that?

I have more success repairing railroads when I give the unit doing the repairs a movement order as well. They rarely fail to complete the repairs (if it is not a rail move, they rarely complete the movement). I was aware that there was a WS cost, but not that it was 3.

Can you clarify a little Jabberwock? Do you give them the repair order and an order to move out of the province?

Or do you move them into the province needing repair and give them the repair order at the same time?

You have to be in a region that has a destroyed railroad and on the 3rd tab on the bottom left of the screen (just to the left of where your troops are displayed) there will be a Repair Rail command lit up if it is possible. (Sorry, keep forgetting what everyone calls those action menus :bonk: )

As a side note, if you are going to destroy rails make sure you don't select the Destroy Rail command until you are in enemy territory or you will tear up your own rails before heading off.....found that out the hard way :siffle:
