Campaign: Early armies/units appearing by event

Sat Aug 04, 2007 6:52 pm

It really seems to me that for the campaign game, all the units that appear via event (say like for the Rebs - the Armies of the Shenandoah and Potomac and other large forces) should be listed down somewhere so that a player understands what is in the 'pipeline' and can account for it in his purchasing/planning.

I am not talking about a unit so-and-so that appears later in the game. But for the early phases, this should be noted somewhere, if only in a document.

I mean, consider it - "Today President Davis was shocked to find that two entire Confederate armies were formed up out of nowhere. Said Davis, "I simply had no idea we had so many southern patriots. Here I was about to call for a draft!""

So, it is irritating to go back and restart a game because you realize you are preparing something that already is in the pipeline. :indien:

As far as I know these armies appear at exactly the same time as your ability to purchase reinforcement units (i.e., build new brigades and regiments), thereby not really affecting one's purchase plan (i.e., build something then discover it is built later on via event). I suppose it could be documented, but it only really affects the April 1861 scenario (indeed, in the first few 'turns' you can do very little of anything let alone build an army).

What these units were, were pre-war organized regiments of militia mustered for federal service (Federal Union and Confederate). They represent the initial forces mobilized that fought in the 1861 campaign (1862 campaign fought primarily with newly formed regiments of volunteers, not based on pre-war militia units).

However, I do believe that the West would benefit by such a mobilization, since a good deal of troops were pre-war militia mustered into Federal service (like those in the East). This may alleviate some of the difficulties players encounter when they try to recreate historic 1862 forces starting in 1861.

Actually, I just found out it is documented, and quite well.

In the DOCS folder, there are Reinforcement schedules for both sides for the April 1861 campaign. :bonk:
