USA Intervention

Fri Sep 12, 2014 1:15 pm

I playing as WE. I have reached August 1915 and USA has declared war on Germany. This seems a bit quick. Have other players seen such a fast intervention?

Yes me, the "USA angered by sunken ships" events boost your alignment really fast, it kills the difficulty a bit.

Actually the same applies to Romania which normally joins the war in 1915 as soon as Bulgaria joins in most cases. In effect, Romania like the US, but for different reasons, was very much torn about entering the war.

After declaring war how soon do troops from the USA start to arrive in Europe (in the game) ?

Between 6 and 7 turns (3 months and a half), then you get steadily increasing reinforcements of all kinds at regular - more or less monthly - intervals over a period of 30 turns...overall, consider the full might of the US Army is in Europe after 1 year and a half...more or less like in history

I got the USA in October of 1916. But it took a little for the existing units to unlock and it took even longer for all the units I bought.

Historically the US Army was not ready to fight when they entered the war. First they had to study with the French and British armies in the Field as well as with training organisations in the rear. Then they determined the Tables of Establishments they would use etc. It was only after the first few months that US Forces slowly started shipping to Europe (there was not enough US shipping either which caused more delay). Then those units went into prolonged training in France. In the meantime the French and British got a bit annoyed and offered that US units should be fed by battalion or even company into existing French or British units for the following few months to gain experience and alleviate the Western Entente's dire need for replacements. Somewhat understandably the US refused and it took a few more months before US units were used in quiet sectors of the front. One thing that great spead up the deployment of US troops to Europe was the decision to ship them with very little equipment and draw on French or British stores once arrived in France...

In short, it took several months for the US Army to be a battle ready force. I wonder how it's with US generals in EAW. A good way to represent the slow growth of the US Army might be not to give them any leaders for the first half year, then add a few 2-stars and only later 3-stars. So at first they'd have to fight under different Western Entente leaders, before they could form their first corps, before they could raise armies etc.

P.S.: I expect had the US entered the war earlier bringing their forces to Europe might have been even slower, but that's one aspect of a war that's hard to determine...

Could it have been that the AI for some crazy reason declared war on the USA? The CP AI sometimes declares war on other nations.

No, I do not think so. I believe that gotrek is correct. Prior to the USA intervention announcement, I was getting 2-3 messages every turn informing me that German U-boats were sinking American shipping. I also had a diplomat in the USA box.

Indeed. Being too successful as the CP in the submarine war is a two-sided sword. It could starve the UK, but the danger of driving the USA in the war is too big.

Yes, sending subs into the Atlantic Shipping Box will very quickly move the USA towards the Entente. This is WAD, and very much what happened historically. After Lusitania, the Germans stopped unrestricted submarine warfare in the Atlantic until 1917, and when they resumed it the USA very, very quickly moved into the Entente camp.

Do you think the abstracted ships sunk elsewhere on the map by roaming CP raiders should be upped?
Altaris, can you please check if this abstraction works in ALL seas, including the Persian Gulf and White Sea (that are truly small sea regions)?
