Capturing Colonies

Sat Nov 03, 2012 1:15 am

I was playing Belguim, declared war on Portugal, and completely cleared Angola of enemy units. I was hoping to claim the place for my own.

Well, I make peace as the victor, and guess what - the whole of Angola reverts to Portugal! Including forts and agricultural facilities I paid for. And I could not find a way to claim it as war booty after all that effort.

Am I doing something wrong? It's not like I demanded they hand over Lisbon.

Depends... Either you did not have enough war score to demand the colony (you tried that in the diplo window right), or the colony is in negative SOI and you can't ask for it (IIRC)... There is an option to not have any negative SOI though, through the Main Meny/Options window (and yes this is totally dynamic and will apply to your current game)

I did look in the dipolmatic window; there was no mention of the Angolan regions. I was wondering if that only applied to national territory, that I would get to keep the Angolan coast I paid in Belgian blood for.

Angola should probably appear, iirc it's in the SOI of Belgium although not very positive. But the OK in the diplomacy screen (F9) won't appear unless you have enough warscore. To raise warscore you need to seize enemy objective regions and defeat them decisively in battles.

Well, even if you conquest all whole enemy land (including all colonies) dont rise enough fast war score IMO, as russia i have "regular" wars with otomans (thanks to events) and demanding of even smallest colony need around 2 years (or even more, didnt calculated it precise) of full ocupation to be able to request them.

People sometime forget the scale of time in these games. This is not EU3. You don't paint the world your color just by moving around. Warscore is not perfect, but it makes perfect sense as an abstraction of campaign progress. To raise it fast you need either to capture one or more important objective regions of the enemy or defeat them convincingly in every battle (destroying elements of their armies). You don't need "full occupation", you need intelligent occupation and decisively won battles. ;)

Moreover, I like the fact that it takes some time to accrue warscore before asking things like colonies. Annexing should be very difficult, occupying easy. Annexing implies also some kind of legitimacy by the conqueror, it should be time-consuming in my opinion. Two years is ok for having that colony virtually forever thereafter.

Kensai, in my game ottomans have no standing armies (first war was hardest as they have most armies), they have praticaly no generals (killed them many when i destoyed thier units, so far they around only 3 active), in time between wars they didnt rebuilded thir army much. Now i only fight (and kill in 2-4 turns) all inurgetns/seperatist/rebels which arise during my occupation in turkey.
Well practicaly all my forces are here.
France/GB is not problem - i make separate peace with them (paying small amoun of money work very nice). So i have no distraction for my goal.
Im not 19.th centuyr expert, but i think colonizing was done by "suggar and whip". Sure colonization was slow, but one done, for colonies it doesn matter if they are ruled by state x or y.
And since defeted state is is hopeless situation, he should bow to any demands enforced against him. Sure, to prevent expoits you should demand only one colony if thier value is over certain value. To prevent getting all colonies during 6 years occupation under acclerated WS gaining.
