Question relating to Germany Unification

I unified Germany. From what I've read I'm supposed to get Alsace and Lorraine. I don't know for a fact I'm supposed to get them, but I thought I was. When I unified, I got a message saying we annexed the two regions. (I started the Franco-Prussian War as one of the things that would spark unification, after I took those two regions. It fired and I unified.)

Good, so far. I had also read I still need to make peace with France. So, I proposed peace and they rejected. Not that big of a deal, I'm still winning battles against them. Next turn they prose peace and propose war reparations of 386 pounds for 2 years. I accept.

When I accepted, I lost Alsace and Lorraine. I am not sure I understand that one. Was I not supposed to get them? In peace offering, they weren't available any more to keep as a peace offer. I took that to mean I get to keep them.

Well, the trick was that you had to ask them

Ask who? The French? The screen didn't have them on the table to be asked. Since not on table as region to be asked for, I didn't ask.

From other contexts, you need to reject their offer and then make one of your own if you have enough warscore - which is A LOT for Alsace & Lorraine.
