GBR - Building Colonial Brigade

Sun Aug 14, 2011 10:40 am

I am having a problem in understanding why I cannot build a Colonial Brigade.

All the map shows orange. Msg: "You cannot build... the region is not part of the units build area." This is even for Home Counties as well as Africa. I am aware that a BLK Colonial unit would not be able to be built in India etc.

Appreciate assistance please.

Thanks.

The African colonial brigade can be built in Freetown.
The English colonial brigades can be built anywhere in the UK, it's all green. See attached piccy...

I assume you have enough money, conscripts, steel and manufactured goods to build the said brigade?
Not what is projected for the next turn, but what you have now, listed in the top row of the F4 screen and at the top of the main game screen.

Get those recruiting sgts down the local taverns. Then I suggest a visit to the local jails, poor houses and debtors prisons as well. :D

Still do not understand Tool Tip: "You cannot build... the region is not part of the units build area."
What has that to do with lack of anything?

It means that is not one of the regions where you can raise that type of unit. Some are recruitable in only a few regions.

Generic message, if it's orange you can build there once you have all the requirements.

Though as a GBR player myself, I don't understand why you would ever want to build a colonial brigade. Both the regular and light infantry brigades are stronger and suitable for action in North America as well as Europe. BLK colonials are stronger and more survivable in Africa. I've been putting Indian regular and light infantry to good use in Egypt and Sudan as well.

Thank you all for prompt replies and continued advice/interest.

I needed these wretched fellows to avoid losing Freetown. Too late. The donkey in Horsguards messed up :D

Colonial Brigades like other colonial troops have reduced attrition from environmental conditions and some protection from supply decay, which is an acute problem in wild regions. They also have organic artillery in a brigade size package, which can often give an initial range advantage.

The black troops are the best for Africa, but not many units are available.

Well if you try to retake it, do so with overwhelming force. The Assante tribe down near Accra decided to pick a fight and I lost the fort there (local units would take 4+ turns to move 1 region by which time they would be almost dead from attrition) So I made new units in Freetown and did a 1 turn water move down the coast. 2x 92 strength BLK brigades wiped out by single 84 strength stack of guys with pointy sticks. Amphibious landings against fortified positions are tough...go figure :neener:

I find that Marines and Legion Etrangere are invaluable for those seaborne landings.
