Koenigsberg supply issues

Fri Apr 02, 2010 4:41 pm

No matter which side I play, Prussian or Allied, I can't seem to hang out in K-berg for long before lack of supply melts my forces away. Where does supply travel to get to the city? I don't understand why we can't improve stocks, I don't seem to be cut off... Anybody else experience this?

As Prussia, I'm in Koenigsberg (2 Fort, 3 Depot). I've got a 3-star 'army' and a couple of corps, one being cavalry. The Russians have been stabbing at me season after season but I've repelled every attempt. They haven't gotten between Poland and me so it's hard to understand why I always whither on the vine? When I approach as Russia, whack the Prussians out of their lair and send them packing west, I experience the same issues. Things limp along for a bit and then my supply network collapses, leaving the Russian army stranded in Koenigsberg and finally annihilated altogether... I'd send y'all my saves but I reloaded the beta patch and whoof! se fue. :neener:

Historically, did Koenigsberg fall ?

What is the best tactic, stay inside and keep it at all cost, or try to do a moving defense ?

To tell you the truth, I usually just leave a reinforced garrison amd evacuate the rest over to pommerania the first chance I get. K-berg is too small to generate enough food and it cannot get adequate supplies pushed to it in winter as it is isolated by desolation so-to-speak. Let the russians attrit their armies plodding around east prussia unsupplied. Keep a northern army to deal with incursions into poland by swedes or leftover russians

i'd rather attempt a valiant defense of the place, given secure supply lines. it worked like a charm for awhile and then i reinforced the place with another corps and they were all in their graves in less than 1/2 a season (had nuthin' to do w/ the Russians, either ;) )

fine, say that's just the way it is as prussia and you're expected to abandon ship and head across poland to germany proper.... okay, but what am i supposed to do as russia? are you just supposed to burn away and never make it into germany except as a miserable rump contingent? i blitzed right into K-berg, ensuring my lines and flanks the whole way, only to arrive and have the whole crew disappear w/in a month :p leure: brutal!

Well as Russia don't try to winter in East Prussia if you don't hold Königsberg. That's the first rule...

Now whether a captured Königsberg can support the entire Russian Army is another question, probably not. The problem also exists with Memel as I tried to winter a small force there one game as well as a minor outpost between Memel and Königsberg. Both starved to death over winter (or rather froze as it was winter weather that ate away the supplies). I think there might be no viable line of supply from East Prussia to Kurland and Russia, therefore the only supply available to a Russian army there in winter is local and that would be minimal...

For Prussia I expect a similar problem might exist with no viable line of supply through Poland (and overseas should not be an option with the Swedish and Russian fleets in control of the Baltic). Still for Prussia there should be enough supply at Königsberg to keep a largish column/smallish army alive (certainly von Lehwaldt has never starved in the winter 56/57 in my games, by the enxt winter he'd always either evacuated or been pushed out by Russia)...

Maybe supply levels in East Prussia should be re-evaluated to represent build up during summer (if you control the depots) and eating up those reserves in winter...

yup, i owned k-berg but like you said, it's not enough to hold the whole (or even half) of the army. forget memel -- it's a graveyard waiting to happen. it seems like i should be able to dedicate some resources to gaining sufficient supplies to support my operation in east prussia. forcing the russians back to the motherland, even in the face of continued success, seems as strange as allowing russia to invade you as the prussian player, when you've ample resources just on the other side of the danzig corridor.

We'll try to find out possible inadequacies in the supply system... one idea we could easily implement is to add a special 'option' for the Russian, upon fall of Keonigsberg, to increase suplly production there... :)

BTW, this gives renewed interest to the Danzig option ;)

i'd like the option as either the russians or prussians to be able to develop greater resources in east prussia. the farther it gets away from historicity, perhaps the more expensive the options should be. but i would definitely like the ability to choose my own theatres of operations, given the resources.
