training militia

just wondering if all generals can upgrade militia or if they need to have the "training master" ability? i have bragg in new orleans trainging up my european brigade as we speak.

B Bragg and W Hardee are both training masters which means they add one point of EXPERIENCE per land element (regardless of type.) that the stack they are in doesn't move that turn.
Hardee losses his skill if promoted- so I normally put him in NO as it is usually quiet zone so he can train a medium stack without going into battle. Bragg is OK to promote so I send him to a big stack that remain stationary often but might move sometimes like Fredericksburg or Nashville.

S Cooper and R Taylor are the CSA training officers- which means they can convert two conscript elements to regular class elements per turn. Cooper of course retires in Nov 1861 but Taylor keeps this trait through all his promotions.

But the trait is to promote conscripts. There are specific types of infantry and cavalry called conscripts and I don't think militia count. If they do, the tooltip needs to be updated and I know what I will do with Halleck next time I play as USA. At any rate, militia will upgrade to infantry eventually.

Sorry I wasn't clear.
When you buy regular inf or cav they arrive as conscript grade.
Then they upgrade to normal grade.
And later still they upgrade to late war units.
having a training officer can speed up first improvement.

When you buy militia they have an extra step to go through.
they have to wait until they upgrade to conscript grade

Certainly Hardee's pre-war experience plays a role in assigning him the trainer trait. Bragg always considered Hardee's corps the most disciplined of the AoT (prior to finding out what a backstabber Hardee was). Don't know if most disciplined means best trained, but it seems close enough. Of course Hardee had inherited Bragg's corps after Bragg took over the AoT so his opinion is hardly free from bias and considering the relative lack of professionalism and/or ability of the other AoT corps commanders (Polk, Cheatham, Buckner, et al) it may have been impossible for Hardee's corps not to look good (i.e. better trained) in comparison to the others.

gotcha, so militia eventually become conscripts on their own, then they can be upgraded after to regular infantry, etc. thanx guys
