Cycling Through Units with E/R Keys

Fri Jan 30, 2009 2:33 pm

The manual says these keys cycle through land Forces's. But I find they skip units that have moved and also some units that haven't with no apparent reason. Particularly the Union units in the Indian Territories are all skipped by these keys.

Is the manual incorrect and these two keys, E/R, use some other criteria to pick units?

Is there any key that will cycle through all the units not locked? If not, why isn't there one?

Hi!

The manual is a little outdated on this.
On latter patches there has been quite a lot fo new shortcut keys added to the game.
Check the patches readme file you must have on your game installation folder and take a look.
You will find them there with lots of other very useful new things
Regards

E/R skips units which have already orders and also fixed units.
Ctrl - E/R skips only fixed units.
Q/W cycles through fixed units.
S (sentry) excludes a unit from the unit cycling. Press S again to remove that behaviour.
Ctrl-S un-sentry all units.

Cheers

I am still finding these keys very buggy in the way they work. For instance I started using the Ctrl R key to cycle with the initial selection on Manassas. It the key never moved the selection to units outside of the Eastern theater.

I switch to using the W key that got me to some fixed units up in the NW. Now the Ctrl R key started showing some of the western units.

Considering the number of units in play this game badly needs some consistently working Previous/Next Unit keys. At the very minimum it should have the following:

Cycle through all units.
Cycle through all non-Fixed units.
Cycle through all units without orders.

Right now the E/R keys control or not are either so buggy as to be useless or are using a criteria no one knows. Scrolling through the entire map is a bit tedious but seems to be the only way to be sure units that have arrived are moved.

I am pretty sure the keys work as I described, I use them quite often.
Has any other user trouble with them?

Sorry, but the "cycle" keys are working just fine, including the latest version v1.13a and I might note, on two different computers that I have the game installed on. It could be you have a quirky keyboard. What type is it?

In my version, 1.12, they appear bugged. I tested it again just to be sure. The keys were very inconsistent about what they would display.

I openned my last game. Selected the army at Manassas then started pressing the Ctrl R key. It cycled through most of the units in Virginia but it never showed a unit west of Cincinati unless I first selected a unit in the far west. Units skipped were like the 1st, 3rd and 4th US Cavalry sitting about where they have been since the beginning of the game.

Also my release notes say that the ctrl R only skips fixed units. From what I have observed it skips a number of other types too but I haven't been able to get consistent enough results to tell what it will display.

I uninstalled everything and reinstalled the original CD and 13b update. The Roster screen does have more filters. Unfortunately they are as flakey as the keys which are also still flakey.

The E/R including Ctrl E/R still don't cycle through all the units.

The Roster page filters are a big improvement but show units that don't meet the filter settings. For example setting the filter to show only unlocked units results in a list that includes locked units.

Some suggestions. First make the selections a toggle that change when on versus off. Right now you can't tell if the filter is on or not except by trying a unit to see what displays. Make it able to handle multiple filters on. Also add the F1 toggled alternate button to the right side so both sets can be used together. This game badly needs a way to get to the units you want to see and not get lost in a list of hundreds.

You almost never are interested in locked units.

You are very interested in looking at list of leaders with troops that have initiative.

Right now the only method that consistently works is to scroll through the entier map every turn checking every group you see. :(

I run a quick test with a AACW scenario but could not find anything suspicious. Can you give an example of a scenario and unit where the problem occurs?

It is WAD that the filter setting show stacks which consists of locked and unlocked units. This is to prevent that you "loose" a stack if you merged it (accidentally) with a locked unit.

Reinstalling the game seems to have fixed most of the problems.
