Attacking Foreign Lands

Sun Jul 19, 2009 8:40 pm

Has anyone tried this strategy as the USA? I mean attacking London or Paris or Amsterdam, etc.? I realize this might trigger Foreign Intervention but does it? What would be the strategic importance of such an aggressive move? I know these cities have value but would it increase NM & VP?

I know this is really out there. But I haven't seen it discussed or if it has been, it's way back in the posts & I haven't gone back that far.

Any ideas or thoughts or discussion?

I would be interested to know if anyone has ever done this. I think it would be a pretty sound stratagy as the USA. London and Paris almost double the CSA economy.

This works much like Kentucky regions in either of the ...w-KY scenarios

Now that you mention Gray, I remember that. I have moused over those areas & I had forgotten that.

Okay, let's refine the original question. Has anyone tried that once FI was triggered? What were the results of that?

Believe it or not I once had the AI as the USA come over with a fleet & bombarded London. There weren't any land units aboard but the fleet did bombard twice & then went on its way.

I think it's a very unusual scenario but I was wondering had it ever been attempted. Thanks for reminding me, Gray. :mdr:

Really, i believe there is no interest to provoke the european powers, even in a "preventive" strategy.

First reason, the french and especially british navies are far more powerfull than Union navy, except if the union player uses the main part of his means in the reinforcement of deep water fleet, means that are more usefull in building ground forces in my opinion. No doubt that the union navy cannot compete with the allied fleet most of the time.

Second reason, a preventive attack over London or Paris will logically involve the war declaration of allies against USA and unlock the forces in Canada, London and Mexico, wich is never good news for Union player ! Particularly with the 1.14 patch wich increases the number of available division for CSA from 30 to 40. Added to the 2 french divisions and the 10 british divisions, it means that the Union player has no more numerical superiority to expect till the end of the game.

But if you want to do it Phamtom, i will be pleased to welcome the red coats and the foreign legion by my side ;) !

You would love it, my fine adversary! I almost take that as a dare. Am I foolish or am I wise or just plain reckless? This was a thing I was wondering about. I may actually attempt to do this thing just to see what would happen. I feel like it's a very risky proposition actually but I think I will experiment in a game vs. AI just to see. Based on the responses I don't think ANYONE has tried it & maybe it hasn't been thought about. It's very much a radical idea.

Gray Lensman, have you any thoughts in this direction as to what may or may not happen? :w00t:

I wonder, phantomfeather, did you ever try this? I've been working on accomplishing the same thing against the AI. I ended up modifying an event to trigger FI in late '62. I was able to take Canada with 6 divisions under Meade and Mexico with 3 American divisions under the Mexican army. The AI has done a poor job of concentrating her fleet, except when the sailed into Charleston just as I was capturing the harbor forts. A couple hundred hits from those coastal guns, and then my waiting monitors, sent a lot of tars to a watery grave. 1864 is just dawning and I am just preparing to send an expedition to the Caribbean. Maybe I'll be able to land in Normandy by the election...

I'm thinking one good Corps with siege equipment could take down the London garrison only if the FI fleets were out of the way.

In my PBEM where FI triggered, the majority of the locked London garrison somehow got into my boats that were coming to pick up new units forming there. The boats got into the English Channel and then I couldn't move the fleet anywhere, not back to London or to the US. I had to drag and drop the locked garrison into the sea to get my boats moving again so the garrison just sat out there and starved in the water  Rather than replay a bunch of turns (it took me a few turns to realize my boats were stuck) I made him promise not to invade London. It would've been very possible as there were only like 2000 troops there.

Anyway, good luck on your foreign ventures.

Ah. So far the BEF hasn't made an appearance on my side of the pond, so I think there are still a good 50k Brits dug in over there. I'll probably have to take a quarter million men across to make the landing. Unless they're starving; right now the pillaged icon is in England, tho I don't know what else is going on cuz it's FoW.
