I never thought about using the filters to look at the events log in an organized, sequential way. I've been blundering through it starting at message #1 to the end. Nice tip, thanks!

Can one safely move brand-new units to "staging points," even before they've received replacements? I'd like to do this, in order to start using McLellan to train their conscripts, but I'm nervous about moving a unit that has almost no men yet. I usually wait a turn and then move them.

I do the same thing. Not sure what to do, but it seems logical to just leave the new ones where they are until they fill up.

One reason I don't touch new arrivals with "red horizontal bars" across their counters: if I add them to a stack, their "time to completion" seems to go up by 10 days or more! Removing them from the stack doesn't fix this. Is this working as intended?

this is because you have changed their posture. Revert them to passive and it should do the trick.

moving units before they are built up

Seems gamey to me that we are allowed to move fresh yet 'unfilled' units, allow them to fill wherever and suffer no ill consecenses ...

unless I missunderstood.. they should fill the same way as a depleted unit fills at the front if they are moved!
