Guessing here... the type of artillery that you brought along does not use "Heavy Artillery" replacements. Instead, they probably require "Field Artillery" replacement points. Heavy Artillery replacment points are used to rebuild the large originally emplaced Fort Batteries. I'm guessing you did not bring any of those along.

If on the other hand, you captured the other sides "Fort Batteries", I'm pretty sure the game does not allow you to rebuild captured artillery units with your own replacement points.

Yes brought heavy arty and field guns. My heavy arty is now starting to take losses.

Didn't know about the rule about not being able to add replacents to captured guns. That puts a different angle on the whole picture.

An amphibious assault would be able to capture them, but would have to brave artillery fire from inside the fort on the way in. If you have a few extra troops, park them outside in a separate stack with defend orders (should give the arty time to retreat). If those Union ships have been bombarding you, they are liable to be in sad shape.

Thanks jabberwock that's exactly what I did anyway, but its nice to hear it was the right thing to do.

But if Gray is right I can't get the captured guns back up to strength anyway.

Gray & Raf,

both absolutely correct. the next turn in my Munro scenario sees all the guns I brought with me (including hvy)back up to full strength. However the captured guns don't improve at all.

What's the rationale behind this?

Not quite sure; I imagine that you don't produce the equipment needed to re-equip units originally built by your enemy?

There might also be a technical aspect here; that originally enemy elements don't belong to any element family that you can buy/build replacements for
