So, divisions with 1 SS, 4 arty and 13 militia elements x's as many as you can afford is better then regulars and elite brigades? Interesting, I've not tried that approach. I guess with the free Elite brigades you get, this is a valid strategy.

I play as the union and militia is generally regulated to garrison and supply protection - the only time they they are in divs is under a general with the training skill. My divs are made up, for the most part, of regulars and brigades that equal 1 SS, at least 1 cav, 2-4 arty (I think I need to focus on always getting 4 arty in a div after reading this post...) and infantry to equal 18 elements. While this gives me very powerful divisions, it may be 'to much' in some instances.

This is a great thread and may have shifted my strategies somewhat. I'm beginning to see the value of many divisions across the map as opposed to fewer 'elite' divisions concentrated.

You have to remember that militia is not infantry. Do not suppose militia can do the job of infantry for any longer period of time. You have to break the opponent before they break you. You *need* more of artillery.

If the division is independent and is just supposed to hold ground, then I suggest a much heavier approach. 1 SS, 8 militia and 8 artillery and 1 cav per division, or something like that.

Notice, that in a corps the composition needs to be (in my opinion) quite different. Not only because of efficency matters, but also because eventually the lone artillery elements will dry out.

I have put militia divisions to good use, you just have to setup the force correct, compared to the enemy force, if you hurry 1 division militia with no arty into entrenched union forces in the east, well thats a no-brainer.

Use militia divisions with the correct leader (hint hint) in the west and/or mississippi theatre with FULL artillery support and cavalry support to DEFEND strategic positions, preventing river crossing for example (Paducah).

another good thing is that militia drains replacements from the militia pool which is generally huge and never dries up (unless that has changed in the last year which i didnt play AACW).

Those units are really worthwile for defending non-key positions and keeping the back free for your elite corps.

I wouldnt suggest this for the Union though.

TRUE.

Even playing with realistic attrition it is hard to spend all of these free boys before mid 1863
