Thinking of buying AACW. How well does the AI play in AACW?

Sun Apr 06, 2008 1:06 am

Hi,

I just bought Birth of America and the AI is pretty good and I'm enjoying the challenge. I am thinking of buying AACW but I only play versus the AI. No patience for PBEM games.

Which side is the AI better at playing? I like playing the CSA but I read somewhere that the Union AI is pretty bad. Is that true? Is the AI better in AACW than BOA?

Thanks for your thoughts on this!

While I have played BoA, I am not very knowledgable about it.

AACW's AI is pretty solid. There are a few options you can tweak that will 'raise' or 'lower' it's performance. (quotes to reflect varying opinions on the changes they make)

Naturally, like any AI, you can find consistent measures to defeat it. I find that it often responds as it should to movements of forces, both large and small. But that it does seem to not use the full potential of the game's command structure. You will find that your 'opponent' often has troops not properly led and they get penalties as a result.

While there is some debate in these forums as to the overall quality of the game's AI, I think it does a great job of making the game a great play. In particular I think if you roleplay a bit with your commanders the game takes on a whole new aspect that can be a lot of fun.

I play as the CSA mostly and my advice with them for maximum fun: play with an eye towards history, but win. ;)

As of the latest patch the AI is quite disappointing. Playing on the hardest setting does make fights tough, however, they AI will still make incredibly nonsensical moves. Nevertheless the game is quite enjoyable.

That being said I have great confidence in the game engine. I believe that the game designers are giving improvements to the AI top priority. On top of that there is a wonderful community of modders who help in this respect.

Yeah my only thought is the taking of Washington such an I-WIN-BUTTIN as Athena very early can easily be tricked (only very early on) into surrendering Washington, thus breaking her moral, other then that shes a good fighter, Grant style, who keeps commming at ya.

The loss of Washington can easily be coded by Ageod I think to not be such a crippling blow; as I have heard expert historical opinion on the matter that it just would NOT have been the end of the war and probably early on had the opposite effect...... in terms of overseas prestige it would have been the only effect; most damaging for the North and helpfull for the south as generally Europeans are more into get-the-capitol mode n national prestige, we american cowboys could care less loll

Oh yeah....n even tho it says I won as the confedreracy Im able to still play on...I just redefine winning as more realistic; as far as I am concerned I havent won till I have invaded the north n leveled her big cities(Yeah pay backs a bit$h lol) n true I cant really level them after a certain level ( wish I could) lol ...def more fun in my opinion......burn New England lol

O yeah 2...I really prefer playing as the north, cuz Athena gives me a heck of a run for my $, even on normal she bowled over Washington, forcing me to tottaly revise my approach for any Pbem. N making me determined to get her back for that lol, playing as the south.

The level of support for players is what seperates out this game from other games in the genre. How many times in the past have you purchased a game and there is zero support for the players or support just disappears.
Buy the game support this superb company. AI is surely the way to go with strategy games compared to games of the past?

Thanks for your comments. I went sort of berserk and ordered the Napoleon game, the AACW, and the Invasion game. I must say that the involvement of the designers in the community prompted my support. It is rare that you see this level of commitment from companies.

Recommended by a guy who has been playing strategy games since Centurion and Civilization!

The AI can do some crazy stuff once in a while, but after beating it on normal (as the rebs), I have now been defeated rather solidly three times in a row on Hard/Give AI Extra Time.

See you on the forums!

Yeah I love the artwork on their playing board as it certainly rivles Civs n I love both games, the only slight complaint I have is wish they didnt Gerrymander areas so badly sometimes, I feel like they look likke a politician trying to win political office sometimes lol
But either way would love to see their version of a WWII game as it would be awsome to see their rendition of the Russian front and T-34's and JS' tanks moving to intercept tigers in the snow lol

Hey Turbo...I issue you a challenge...yeah I beat it on normal, then hard, n probably could on mega-hard lol......but only cuz im good n your NOT lol!!!!
Its one of those things where I tell you children, 'dont try to emulate me at home, you might get your feelings hurt lol....get the game n prove you can do it too! I spent hours of getting my butt kicked (by Athena), Turbo before I was able to turn the tide on Athena (and learn enough about the game) and tho Im not the God-of-Wargames Im certainly a grizzely veteran lol (Maybe a sub-diety lol)

If you think your just gona just pick up the game and emulate my feats you gotta another thing comming lol....(Athena eka AI) will mop the floor with ya Turbo!
