Divisions...one more time PLEASE

Sat Jan 26, 2008 9:11 pm

one last time....I have read that if you have a General and make him a division commander you can have up to 18 elements WITHOUT command penalties.

Also IF you add another General to the stack you double your command points and should be able to add a total of 36 elements without command penalties.

I have tried that every way possible that I can think of without success.

Can anybody on here explain EXACTLY how this rule works and if i AM correct about the 36 units..do I incorperate them (with the + button) in the original General?

And if not, where the heck do I put them?

Thanks!!!

You're close, but not quite there. :)

If you have a division, it will cost 4 command points, no matter how many elements there are, 2 or 18.

If you have a stack which contains 1 division (only), it will have a 10% command penalty. If you add a 1-star to that stack, you'll get 2 extra CP and thereby get just enough CP to avoid a penalty.

The most you can have in one unit, is 18 elements, when that unit is a division.

When you form a division you can have up to 18 elements in the division, and it will cost 4 CP whether there are 2 elements or 18 elements. Therefore its not worth it forming a division for any stack that requires 4 CP or less.

You won't be able to add more than 18 elements(regiments or batteries), and the units outside the division have nothing to do with it (save for elements that provide bonuses to the whole stack)

A general provides 4 CP per star (a 1 star will provide 4 CP, 2 stars 8 CP, etc.). BUT unless the stack is a Corps or Army stack, it is considered "out of the command chain" which means the total CP is halved. This is why a stack with a single 1 star general only provides 2 CP and if you form a lone division outside of the corps or army stack it will be a 10% penalty.

But you can fix this by adding a "second in command" - a general who has no unit under his direct command. They will add half their CP to the stack. Thus if you have a 1 star general without a unit and a division in a stack(outside of a corps or army stack), with no other units, the total CP provided is 4 CP + 4 CP = 8 CP / 2 ("out of command chain penalty") = 4 CP. Since a division requires 4 CP, you get no penalty.

You could also add a 2-star or a 3-star general to make a bigger stack that does not suffer CP penalty. The 3-star would add half his CP (6 CP), and if he had a second in command 1 star that would be another 2 CP, for a total of 8 CP. That way you could have 2 divisions (4 CP x 2 = 8 CP) with no command penalty.

Generally, 1 combat element cost 1 CP, but some brigades cost less than that (there are 3 element briagades that only cost 2 CP. 5 and 6 element brigades that only cost 4 CP), so if you added another 18 combat elements it would cost roughly 18 CP, which is more than the standard corps can hold without penalty.

To summarize:

- Every combat unit cost command points (CP)*
- Combat units generally cost 1 CP per element
- Divisions can be formed, that cost4 CP, and can hold up to 18 combat elements(infantry or calvary regiments or artillery) in them, a significant savings when more than 5 or 6 units are added to them (at full capacity of 18 elements, ~0.25 CP per element as opposed to ~1 CP per element). A division adds no special ability to the stack beyonds its ability to contain units. Units must be added by CTRL clicking them and the divison, and hitting the merge button. Every division requires at least a 1 star lead it.

- Generals provide command points to the stack
- A 1 star general will provide 2 CP to a stack that is not a corps or army stack
- A 2 star general will provide 4 CP to a stack that is not a corps or army stack
- A 3 star general will provide 6 CP to a stack that is not a corps or army stack
- A general that does not directly command a unit, can provide half his CP to the stack (does not apply to Corps or Army stacks, and there can only be one general who is second in command per stack, who has the second most seniority in the stack)

*Except certain scripted elite divisions, thanks LeRicain

The only exception to your nicely stated summary is that the special elite brigades that arrive with a general (examples: the 'Original Iron Brigade' and the 'Irish Legion') have zero CP cost.
