Take that, Athena!!!

Tue May 19, 2009 4:17 pm

It was April 1862, and the winter was unusually long. I was building up my armies and decided to send a large force down south for an amphib invasion. I couldn’t decide on where. New Orleans always seems easy. Florida doesn’t pay well (except in the scenario). Charleston and Mobile are too beefed up. I decided on Portsmouth, Virginia. So, I sent a very large force (about 23K) with all the additional elements to make it a fully functioning army (HQ, medical, signal, supply and naval engineer – I forgot a balloon). It landed and I took Portsmouth. I then used supply ships to build a depot and then moved on Norfolk. While I was besieging Norfolk, a reb army under Macgruder moved down and began besieging Ft. Monroe. Well, I was able to make Norfolk capitulate first, and then moved everyone back to Portsmouth. While I rested and recuperated my army (commanded by Butler, by the way), MacGruder battered himself against Monroe. I was going to float over to Williamsburg to relieve Monroe, but I waited too long and the fort fell. Well, I boated a division over to Hampton Roads (just west of Ft. Monroe) and caught Macgruder in a trap. Now, he is besieged, unsupplied, blockaded and suffering cohesion fits. I look forward to the inevitable “surrender” bullet.

Take that, Athena!!!!
Bless her heart!! She’s done it enough to me, I just wanted to savor the one time that I have had the upper hand.

Nicely done -- and probably a good example of why the CSA didn't try to take Fort Monroe historically. The North is very easily able to resupply the fort with its Navy. The South, on the other hand, had no such luxury...and probably would have been pounded to death once the fort was taken.

Husky1943,
Don't wait for the surrender! Get in there and kill them all (you get experience points for killing her troops, but none for them starving to death). Give 'em a few rounds of starvation, and then smash the remnants. It feels so great to see all those units disappear (and show up on the destroyed units tab).

Howdy Guys,
Thanks for the nod and you're right. I didn't think about the experience factor....I will go in for the kill. The rebs have got to be sucking wind right now. Heck, if I can build up enough troops, I might have to march up both sides of the peninsula. Petersburg, here I come.

Husky,

Athena is also Zeus' favorite child, so now it's a family affair.

She is often attended by an owl, and is often accompanied by the goddess of victory, Nike.

So if you see any combination of these, you are toast.

Great.......The one time I shoot off my mouth and I actually annoyed a diety! Well, if I have to be beaten down, might as well be my a good-looking woman (who appears to be well-armed).

Don't forget that she is not only the goddess of wisdom but also the goddess of war(fare) and she is very good in that area... :D

Followup......

Realizing that Jim was absolutely correct, I decided to wait two months, allowing the rebs time to empty their stomachs and start to decline in cohesion. I was giving hits at a much higher rate than I was taking them, and then went to the "Assault" mode. Nice....I was spanked so hard, it left a mark. I can't remember the exact number, but I had about 11K in my division, and was repelled with about 3,800 casualties compared to 800 Rebs. It still stings. But, I'm shipping a medic over to them from Portsmouth, so I should recover quickly and be able to renew the assault.

Which put a question in my mind.......I know a depot pulls supplies better, but does a depot also pull replacements more efficiently?

Off the top of my head, there's a statement somewhere in the documentation or here or on the Wiki that your Replacements show up only in Cities or possibly Depots; I'd have to check on the latter.

IOW, go to a City to 'get the red out'. You won't receive them in the field.

I really don't know if Depots hasten Replacements - I would guess that a Depot does not do this.

Is the Wiki back yet?

You don't need the wiki for this. The manual can help you too ;)
Check page 48 for example.
Things change if you use the hardened attrition option as its explained on the option tooltip.
Cheers!
