Ships in port for defense?

Tue Jul 08, 2008 9:52 pm

This seems bugged. As the Union, the ai captured Norfolk. I counter attack and they are led by Farragut as a 3 star general using his navy ratings as a ground commander and they had 450+ cannons because their entire fleet was sitting there. Needless to say, I got pretty much creamed. Known issue?

I could see a few cannons from a parked fleet being used, but not all of them, and Frarragut is a naval commander, not a ground tactics guy.

Perhaps i am mistaken but if ships are parked in the harbor they don't participate to the fight even if they appear in the battle report screen. In other words they are just sitting there. The same is with gunboats whose support is limited to the amphibious invasions and don't participate to ground combat as Pocus explained once. Ships could be different because of the bombing capability? Maybe...but i happened to capture ships, this means they don't go to the sea.

Let's wait for the final answer :)

Unfortunately I didn't get a screen shot, but it sure seems like they were used. If not they just shouldn't be displayed as participating, or have a separate in-port box.

I had Thomas Jackson with 28k troops vs Butler who was not dug in with 21k. I was in attack mode, normal aggresseviness (not assault) I had him outgunned and outnumbered without the ships and remember losing like 9k troops and 1200 horses and being forced to retreat.

Ships should not be used, elements which are not used are shown without their back color. You lost from another reason. Why are these ships listed? Because it is an information of importance, for example when you engage a fleet and you see troops on board. This is the reverse here.

Farragut is listed, but is not used either. This is a display bug that we just corrected in WIA and which will be corrected in the next AACW patch.
