Hi pashley,

sorry for the trouble.

Please reinstall the game. If the installer doesn't finish try the following:

The installer finished it's work and launched the registration utility, but for some reason it does not appear on the screen. This utility is used to set the screen resolution for the game and to save your serial number.

Please check first that the installer window don't mask the utility. Try to reduce the installer window, or do alt-tab to check if a program named 'AGESettings' is waiting in memory.

Vista might also ask you for the permission to start the AGESettings program. Sometimes this window opens in the background. Please check the Taskbar if you find it there.

If this does not work, please terminate the installer by clicking on the close button.
Important: Do not hit the setup CANCEL button. Doing so will result in an incomplete installation.
Alternatively you can close it by going to the task manager to terminate it. (Launch the Windows Task Manager by hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL and clicking on task manager. Then, go to the Applications tab and terminate the installer (setup program). The name of the installer should be Setup_AACW.exe or something close. Right click on it and terminate it.)

At this point, you will need to launch the AGESettings application manually. You should have a program group created (in the Start Menu) with the game registered. There is a link to the AGESettings utility (If you don't find it: The utility is installed in the game directory. The name is "AGESettings.exe"). Please start it and enter your serial.

Now you should be able to start and play the game.

I hope this helps!
Cheers
Norbert

There are 2 set-up programs sitting in Task Manager, one open, one I can't open, so that 2nd one "AGESettings" is indeed sitting in memory.

I can't cancel setup with close/alt4, unresponsive. I cancel Set-up, open AGESettings, asks for a serial number, and "system can't find the path specified" error message.

As the close-button and Alt-F4 don't work, have you tried closing the installer using the task manager?
If you chose to cancel the setup, the installation will not be valid.

Yes this is Vista.

I finally got installation program closed and got a "completed" message by closing thru the Process screen of Task Manager. Unfortunately, I still can't open the registration file at that point.

Through customer service I've asked that the game be sent by CD, might give me some more options. No reply yet.

You'll get the very same file on the CD and from download...

Vista has something called UAC (User Account Access) which put more controls on applications installed on C:, so you can try installing the game to another disk drive, Vista will be more lenient with it.

Installing on the F Drive anyway.

So I got it installed, after reading every Vista post here.

1) When the program finishes installing and locks up, cancel it thru process manager
2) Manually input the serial number in general.opt
3) Install patch 1.10

Woot!

Now, next problem. Locks up 1/4 way thru booting up.

So, is the game to your liking?

Here are the info I found on etray:

The process Media Center Tray Applet belongs to the software Microsoft® Windows® Operating System or ehtray.exe or Xtreme Sound PCI by Microsoft Corporation (http://www.microsoft.com).

Important: Some malware camouflage themselves as ehtray.exe, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder. Thus check the ehtray.exe process on your pc whether it is pest.

I have tried all of this to no avail. When I try to run the settings app separately, it doesn't appear to run. However, when I check out processess in the task manager, it is there. When I try to start the game and check the processess, sometimes two or three versions of the settings app are running, but again, they don't appear. This is extremely frustrating and it appears I wasted $40!

Hi saluki17!

The AGESettings.exe does not much more than writing the serial key to the configuration file General.opt. You can also do this by yourself.
You can find the file General.opt in the directory there you installed American Civil War, in the subdirectory Settings: "...\AGEod's American Civil War\ACW\Settings\"
Please open the file using Notepad or any other editor. Near the end of the file you will find an entry "Serial =". This is the place there your serial number should be written. Please enter it there. Save the file and close the editor. Now you can start the game.

Cheers

I did as you suggested and I get the same result. The game starts loading, but stops about 25% of the way into it. When I check my processes running, both the game and the settings files are running, but not progressing. :siffle:

I've encountered this a couple of times, and it seemed to be due to interference from some (unnecessary) background processes. Making sure that you don't run other stuff in the background might be worth checking out :)

Hm... tricky!

Can you please send me some files, so that I can take a deeper look?
Firstly I would like to have the General.opt, which is located in the game directory ...\ACW\Settings\.

Secondly I would like to take a look to the DxDiag report file of your system.
How to get it:
 1. From the Windows Start menu, choose Run
 2. Type "DxDiag" (without the quotes) in the Run textbox and press OK
 3. Wait for the progress bar on the lower left to complete
 4. Finally, press the button labeled "Save All Information..."
This is the file I need.

As the last file I would like to have the report file the program HiJackThis produces. This program logs the processes running currently on your pc as well as the programs which are loaded when the PC is started. I attached HiJackThis to the post. Simply un-zip and run it (no installation required). (This program is a free tool provided by TrendSecure, a company which produces security software. http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/de/tools/security_tools/hijackthis).
To get the report file:
 1. Start the HiJackThis.exe.
 2. Click on the button 'Do a system scan and save logfile'.
 3. Save the file.
 4. Quit HiJackThis. Do NOT do any changes with the Fix Checked-Button unless you know what you are doing! Please scan only. :)

Please send the 3 files to support@ageod.com
Thanks!

Cheers
Norbert
