pbem -multiple patches

Sat Mar 22, 2008 12:51 am

i have been invited to take part in a pbem game which i am more than happy to do, however i have a problem i want to sort before i proceed, i am already involved in a pbem using 1.09 and the new pbem oponent is using 1.09e. Is it impossible to play both games, ie do you have to have identical versions to pbem

I dont want to let my new potential opponent down but my existing game will have to take priority if i cant do both

There is a procedure (modpath.ini) for running multiple versions of the game. It can be found on the wiki here, under the title Creating a new version of the game for your mod. If you can't run both 1.09 and 1.09e using that procedure, you can install the game a second time in a different folder and apply the 1.09e patch to it.

You don't need to install it, even. You can simply copy the entire folder to have two seperate installations (and then e.g. install the 1.09e patch on the copy)

Perhaps you could assist with a related problem. I've done as you suggested to create another installation and everything seemed fine except ...... I tested the installation by creating a new game. However when clicking on the 'end turn' button I was immediately prompted with the 'enter a password' box before the AI would conduct its turn. I thought I knew what was happening as in the orginal installation I use 'Turn Compression' in Options which requires a password. So I entered the password I had in the orginal installation and everything worked. Trouble I am asked to enter the password every turn.

So I deleted the copy, went back into the orginal, unchecked the 'Turn Compression' and started again. Difficulty still remains that before the AI will perform a move I'm still asked for and required to enter a password. Clicking on the 'Cancel' button in the Password request dialogue box only results in being thrown out to desktop with a critical error message.

Can anyone shed some light if possible?

Sounds strange? I take it that you aren't prompted like this when playing the "original" copy of the game?

No Rafiki, I'm not. I have turn compression on with a password and I'm never prompted for it. Thats with version 1.09

It only happens in the cloned version. All I did was a straight copy of 1.09 into another folder then patched 1.09e into the new folder. It is definately linked in some way to the 'compression check box' and 'password' in the Options menu. I've experimented several times now and it seems that once I've entered a password then everytime I end a turn the computer does its usual processing then prior to the supply segments section I'm asked to enter the password. Even if I have turn compression unchecked I'm still asked for the password if I previously have entered one. The only way I can avoid it is if I leave the password section totally blank but that then defeats the object of protecting the files in PBEM.

One thing I have not yet tried is copying the 1.09 original and not applying the 1.09e patch and seeing whether the problem is related to the copying rather than the application of the patch. I'll do that tomorrow and post my findings.

Tis a puzzlement

Did a recopy of 1.09 and no problems with turn compression and password protection. Downloaded latest patch and installed and problem reappeared. As soon as you enter any password then you are prompted for it every time you click on 'end turn' and reach the supply segments portion of the move. Will post now on the 1.09e patch thread.
