Zip files and Passwords

Sun Mar 02, 2008 9:27 am

Just to clear up the confusion that I have I would appreciate if someone could put me straight on zipping files within the game and allocating passwords.

My questions are these - using version 1.09

1. If under options I choose to check 'Turn Compression' I'm requested for a password. Can I leave it blank or do I have to choose a password?

2. If I choose a password does my PBEM opponent need to know what that password name is?

3. If I have more than one PBEM game current, should I have a different password for each game and what problems, if any, may I encounter if I do have a different password for each game?

Sorry to be such a pain, a wargame buff I might be, but when it comes to computers I'm more like a monkey with a microwave. Its an age thing.

The 2 functionnalities are linked but not dependent, I mean, the compression is just to reduce the files size and solve some problems of file corruptions when using PBEM, and the password is made to protect your own datas in the saved game.
So you can leave the password blank but anyone can be able to load and/or modify your data.

2. If I choose a password does my PBEM opponent need to know what that password name is?
No, the only case where more than one person need to have the same password is when they are playing the same faction in the same game.

3. If I have more than one PBEM game current, should I have a different password for each game and what problems, if any, may I encounter if I do have a different password for each game?
no, If you have different password for different games, you have just to remember changing it before loading another game (better use the same).

I hope I replied to your questions.
Regards.

Are you certain of this? My opponent turned on compression and added a password. I received an error trying to process his ORD file as the host until I enter the exact same password.

If the file is password protected, the host side would logically need it to open it, right? And if the host password protected a TRN file, the non-host would need the password to open it, right?

So I think both sides need the same password...which makes them useless.

There is a problem which appeared since the last patch. We are investigating on it.

No Andrew there is a problem with the compression and password protection (as I use them both extensively hosting my PBEM games) with the 1.09e patch. If you stick with 1.09 it works fine and your opponents move is protected and you, as host, dont need to know your opponents password :) .

Perhaps 1.09d is ok too...
