Monitor goes beserk over demo tutorial

Tue May 08, 2007 3:13 pm

Hi, just discovered this game yesterday and I'm seriously considering buying it.
Actually, there's only one thing stopping me from buying it right now.
I've downloaded the demo and what little I have seen looked great. But unfortunately I only get to see a little as there is a technical problem.
Upon starting the tutorial my monitor starts clicking (as if it's changing resolution) and keeps clicking every two seconds or so untill I shut down the game or exit to the main menu. This happens when I go to the options screen too.

So, I wanted to hear whether this was a known issue with the demo and/or full game (perhaps with certain hardware or resolutions or something like that) or whether I should start looking for the problem on my side of the fence.

Regards,

Norman

Hi briny_norman!

I have not heard of a similar problem till now.
Which screen resolution are you using? Have you changed the resolution settings with the configuration utility or are you using the standard settings? Have you tried other screen resolutions?

Thanks for your answer!

I've just tested the demo on another machine, but with the same monitor, and it ran fine. So the problem is probably with my vid-card.
It's a Radeon X800XL. Any reports of problems with this card?

I think it is strange that you only hear the clicking noise while on the game map and not in the main menu, as they use IMHO the same resolution/refresh rate.
Have you tried to set the game with the configuration utility to another resolution?
I also read about known clicking noises which are caused by the controller of the fan of the ATI X800XL but of course then these noises are produced by the card and not the monitor.

I only see this now, but I've been too vague concerning the symptoms.
The monitor clicks AND blinks (i.e. goes black for an instant and then returns), just like when changing resolution.
It is of course this incessant blinking thats a real problem - making it impossible to play.
And yes, it is real strange that it doesn't misbehave in the main menu. When I start a tutorial or even just go to the options screen the blinking starts... But as soon as i go back to the main menu - no problems. ???
I'm borrowing a friend's graphics card tonight and will see if that makes a difference.

One more thing: I can't seem to change resolution - my choices in the setup utility won't stick. Probably because I am playing the demo...?

have you an up to date video driver? Your DxDiag file can help you in that.
