Major Instalation problem

Fri Apr 13, 2007 10:12 pm

Dear Ageod

I am not able to install AACW. The installation procedure stalls on both of my home computers at the very end of the installation procedure. It seems as If the problem lies with the Agesettings.exe code because the procedure never manages to prompt me for the activation code. The reason why I believe this to be the case is because I tried to install the game on my office computer at work which proved successful. The only difference between this successful and the abortive installations at home were the activation code prompting at the very end of the installation. Further investigation into this finding revealed that the Agesettings.exe is apparently the code which is stalling the installation on my home computers.

Playing on my office computer is NOT an option; therefore I am in desperate need of help to solve my installation problem on my home computers. Both home computers more than meet the system requirements for playing the game (see below).

I eagerly await any direction as to how to solve my installation problem.

Kind regards

Nap

Had the same problem. After killing the install process, then uninstalling, deleting the folder (uninstall left some files) and restarting the computer, the installation went through the 2nd time.

Same problem occured when patching to 1.00a today (although not until trying to start the game; the patch installed without problem). The game never started. I killed the process in task manager, then I tried starting AGEsettings, no go either. So I restarted the computer again, now AGEsettings worked, and then the game started ok.

Strange thing indeed, at the end of the installing procedure, AGEsettings is supposed to be launched. We are using a professional installer, so I can't do much things if there is a problem here.

But there is the first backup solution: if your code is not yet entered, the game itself with try to launch agesettings.

And lastly, if it fails, there is the manual solution, which is always working:

go to American Civil War\ACW\Settings

Find the file General.opt, open it with notepad.

At the end you see something like

6. Serial number (unencrypted, keep this file for you only)
Serial =

paste your code after the equal and save. And voila, it should works! :)

Hello Pocus

Neither of the proposed solutions by you and VladTepesz have solved my problem. :p leure:

The installation still stalls at the end and even copying the serial number manually into the General.opt (and saving afterwards) file as you advised as my last resort has not made the game run. The AAWC.exe is simply still not responding (the same goes for the AGEsettings.exe).

The serial number copying procedure resulted in the end lines in the General.opt file as shown below. I assume they are correct?

7. Serial number (unencrypted, keep this file for you only)
Serial = xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx

So, bottom line, I am still unable to run the game on both of my 2 computers at home....... Therefor, any help is still most welcome !!!!

Kind regards

this is perhaps not a problem with the serial key then, but with the system or the video card. Can you send to support@ageod.com the files in American Civil War\ACW\Logs

Hello Pocus

Thank you for your prompt reply. I would love to send you the log files. However there are no files in the American Civil War\ACW\Logs folders - neither on my home laptop nor on my stationary home computer......Does that provide a clue as to the nature of the problem?

I can forward you my computer's dxdiags, if that is of any help.

Kind regards

Are you running your Windows under an account with administrator rights?
If not please try this, as I played around a bit and encountered problems too if I try to start the game under an account with limited rights.

I run both my computers under administrator accounts. So, unfortunatly that was not the clue, damned !

What is the size in bytes (not kb) of AACW.exe and AGESettings you get?

When you launch agesettings, you get what exactly? This is a simple win32 utility, nothing fancy, no directX.

Hi Pocus

I do not know if this information is of any value to solving my installation problem, but BoA has been running just perfectly on my 2 computers since the game was released more than year ago.

Hi All,
I've had similar problems to Nap which continue even after a successful install.

More than half the time, the game doesn't start, the only solution is a cold reboot, uninstall followed by a reinstall. Installs are inconsistent too, about half the time I get the same symptom as Nap with the install hanging and not executing AGESettings.

When the problem occurs, task manager shows AACW.exe or AGESettings.exe processes running, but they haven't consumed any CPU time and only a tiny amount of memory. I've left the PC for a period of time to see if the process is updated, but it never does.

When it does start, the game runs fine, very smooth gameplay/graphics/sound no crashes.

OS=Vista,
Processor=Athalon 64x2 Dual Core 5000+
Gfx=NVIDIA Geforce 7300GT
Sound=Onboard.

Now this is getting reeeaaallly weird. AACW use the same security module and DirectX library than BOA, and I can only think of that as things which can prevent the execution of the application.

I have an half baked patch in the making, if you want to apply it, perhaps the AACW.exe version in it will run...

http://ageoddl.telechargement.fr/patch_AACW_v1.00b.exe

Also, what are the programs that you have running in the background that you don't have on your work computer? I'm thinking of Norton AV or any other application like that? Try to go offline, then disable all of theses, just to check.

Try installing Video/Sound codecs - I had an issue with the game running at all that I resolved by installing the KL Codec pack.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5230

To easily kill all but critical processes;

EndItAll2;

http://www.roychaffin.com/pub/enditall2.zip

I use EndItAll2 to help with play of resource intensive games, like Silent Hunter 3 and IL2 series, and as a diagnostic tool.

Hi all

Thank you all for your suggestions (patch, updated codecs), however, to no avail. AACW is still not running on neither of my 2 computers.

I checked the background programmes with the ones running on my office pc and the major difference was the anti virus programme McAfee on my 2 home computers. But still, nothing happens, after having closed McAfee ond all the other background programmes.

I had another look at what exactly happens when I try to activate AgeSettings.exe and AACW.exe on my 2 home computers.

When I try to activate AgeSettings.exe the exe-files does generate a txt file
!Profile0.txt, but after that AgeSetteings.exe stops, no serial code prompting, nothing. When I subsequently try to activate the AACW.exe file, AACW.exe erases the !Profile0.txt file, but then it stops in its tracks.

Compared to my office computer the AACW.exe should replace the "old"
!Profile0.txt file with a new version of the !Profile0.txt file, but that does not happen. Does this info provide any clue as to where my installation problems lie?

As a side note, my office computer is able to run either games, BOA or AACW, with both games installed.

I did some more experimentation, also installed the patch (thanks Pocus.)

If I run AACW before any other program after a reboot it starts consistently. However, trying to start it when other programs are running (or in one case have run and completed) results in it just hanging.

I don't have any anti-virus software, but one or more of Outlook, Word, MediaPlayer, GoToMyPc or Firefox up and running means I have to reboot before starting again. After starting AACW, I have had no interference from any of the other programs, can start them and ALT-TAB beterrn

I have a lot of background programs and services which start up automatically, none of them appear to affect AACW.

I'm starting to suspect that it's either Media Player (with Urge plugin) or GoToMyPc which are causing the conflict. Both have security modules running in the background, MediaPlayer's doesn't always shut off when the program is closed.

No, this still don't make sense, sorry.

Can you download

http://ageoddl.telechargement.fr/AGETesting.exe

and run this application, you will get 3 executables. Tell me which ones are working and which ones are not, this will give me some clues.

thanks.

this would be more impressive if a solution was found :)

Did you install the new patch, there is a fresh executable here. Did launch AACW right after reboot?

An idea among others, your DxDiag don't specify a sound card, but I suppose you have one? This is a known issue with BOA/AACW, you must have a direct music compliant sound card.

All 3 working fine. I ran the test with AACW running suspended in the background, and with it shut down.

Once AACW starts up it's very durable :)

I also echo Nap's statement about the personal service Pocus.

Hi Pocus

Yes i did install the new patch, and did try to start the game right after reboot, however no positive effect.

With regard to your comments on the sound card I am not sure what you mean or where to look in the dxdiag to investigate the existence or none- existence of direct music compliant sound cards on my home computers. Therefore, could you, by any chance, provide me with som direction of where to look in the dxdiags?

If the service provided by Wilhammer don't works, can you try to boot in safe mode, to be sure that anything but the mandatory is loaded, then launch AGESettings (not AACW, it needs DirectX and this would not work). I'm curious to know if this simple application (AGESettings) is able to run when nothing but the system is up.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Pocus

Wilhammer suggestion didn´t solve problem, unfortunately (thank you anyway Wilhammer).

However, AgeSettings launches successfully on both computers when nothing but the systems is up. Does that imply that the solution to my installation problems is to identify which of the other programmes interferes with the launch AACW.exe by closing each programme down sequentially and ckecking whether AACW.exe runs or not ?

Nap,

Do you have MediaPlayer running, or a media clip played through IE?

I've narrowed my problem down where only MP prevents AGESettings or AACW from starting. I was even able to watch AACW do nothing for 5 minutes, then suddenly start after shutting down MP.

Registration Window Off-screen

Mon Apr 16, 2007 10:53 pm

I have had the same problem with installation. I beleive what is happening is that the registration screen is appearing off the screen. I was running with two monitors and moved the second monitor to the right of the main one. Viola, there is the registration screen!

I'd be willing to be that if you look up the registry entry for that registration screen there will be large or wierd numbers for the x and y position entries...

Another suggestion - wild shot - turn off your anti-virus realtime protection.

What AV do you run?
