This is mostly a guesstimation on my part, admittedly, but I imagine that if you don't have the game information provided in the registry, it will be more difficult to patch the game?

Exactly how much more difficult I don't know; might just be as inconvenient as having to manually select the game directory?

you just have to specify manually where is the game, the registry is not used for anything else for now.
