If you don't mind restarting a new game, then the easiest solution is to delete the save folder.

and what if it does it again? i was into 1864, not very happy about that. is there a way to delete the last turn, and just go to a previous one before it went haywire?

I had the same problem for a while. If you somehow wound up with saves from the demo (like the install program for the full game didn't overwrite the tutorials), they are the problem. Delete them, and your problem should go away.

open the save directory, first delete all old saved games. If this don't fix the problem (launch the game to check that), there is in the next update (this day I think) a procedure which should delete corrupted files.
