I lose on turn one!

Sun Nov 09, 2008 3:49 am

And not because I suck, either. For some reason, every scenario I play in AACW, for either side, I start with 0 National Morale. This was the case in the unmodified version I installed out of the box, and remains the case in my 11.1d version, with Lensman's historical accuracy fixes. And it's really freaking annoying. I don't accumulate any victory-points throughout the game, most events will not fire, and I can't use most of the economic and other options.

I've just started playing this game, literally, a few days ago, but I'm loving it, now that I'm getting to understand it. Even playing on through the losses has allowed me to learn - I'm getting better at supply distribution, I've come to understand the chain of command and have, on my own, formed units up from brigades, to divisions, to corps, I'm getting better at handling cohesion, and I'm understanding how to play with loyalty.

But I really want to not, you know, lose on turn one. So any help I can get would be appreciated.
P.S.: Is there a way to manually trigger events within the game engine, besides fulfilling their conditions? I want to start modding events and adding my own leaders, and I've looked into the requisite files and the Wiki articles, but I haven't figured this out, yet. And it's going to be sort of annoying to test events if I have to fulfill their conditions every time.

Anyhow, that's all! Thanks in advance for any assistance you can render!

EDIT: I had a look at my scriptfiles to try and puzzle this out, and, judging by the stated editions to, say, all of my resource pools, which I do not receive, I'm wondering if the scripts aren't being applied, for some reason. Is there something special you need to do to apply scripts?

I'll assume Rafiki is going to move this, and respond here, rather than creating a duplicate thread over in Tech Support. Figured this was a gameplay issue - some sort of option I hadn't noticed, or somesuch. Anyhow!

I did, indeed, receive the prompt to insert my serial number, and did so gladly. I have it sitting on a nearby table, still happily pasted inside of the box I bought just a couple of days ago. If it'd help, I'd be glad to PM it to you or a moderator. I could also read out the timeline in the back of the AACW manual I have sitting beside me, or the end-user license agreement right behind it, if this is a veiled way of asking me whether I actually paid for the game. :neener:

But, yeah. I don't believe that during the 1.11d update it asked me for my serial, nor (of course, since it was merely a file-overwrite operation) did this come up during the 'installation' of your own accuracy-increasing measures.

If the solution is 'uninstall and reinstall', though, give it to me straight, doc! I'd hate to amputate, but what must be done, must be done...

Gray_Lensman wrote:okay... next question... (before starting an uninstall/reinstall process), Is this a Vista installation? Depending on your answer, I have some additional information applicable to an installation on a Vista system. (in other words it doesn't apply to an XP installation).

As much as I may hate this OS, it's what my laptop came with - yes, this is a Vista installation, my desktop has XP, but it's relegated to other things than gaming, right now, so I'm stuck with this!

I'd be glad to hear any additional information, though. Oh, and two things:
First, where do I find Patch 1.12? Or is it so obvious that if I just glance back into the forums or click the 'latest patch' button on AACW's website, it'll pop out at me?

[s]Second, should I still go through with the reinstall, right now?[/s] (Stupid question, nevermind!) Thanks for the help, by the by, Lensman.

Hooray!

Though I dislike installing anything outside of Program Files, I figured you knew best on this - and, don't sweat it, I don't blame AGEod for the fact that Microsoft is a bunch of bean-eating cattle-lovers. So, I followed your directions to the letter, reinstalled, upgraded to 1.12RC, and lo and behold,
I didn't lose on the first turn! I started with morale, and rail and riverine capacity, happy, happy day! ...Only...

There were a few things missing. Labels, I suppose you'd call them? I couldn't actually see my morale or victory points, I only knew I had them because I didn't lose, and because I was able to look in the ledger and see. There's just blank wood paneling where they were, though the tooltip still pops up to try and tell me about them.

And the options tabs are blank, too. The tooltips appear, so I still know what I'm hovering over, but where once there was "AI", "Game", etcetera, now there's just...blank wooden grain. Of course, it's a fair price, I suppose, for having a working game, except for the fact that I can't see my victory points. But is it supposed to be that way?

Anyhow! Thanks for helpin' me out, muchly! Oh, and, uh. What about that question I asked before - triggering events within the game engine? Any way to do it? Such as Paradox Interactive's F12 'commandline' menu, or the same from the folks behind Rome and Medieval Total War?

Feel free to take your time responding, though. I'm going to be busy putting Richmond to the torch~

EDIT: I have user account control turned off on my Vista, so it shouldn't be interfering with anything I do, including installations. But Vista works (or doesn't work, the lousy, scum-sucking...!) in mysterious ways. I might just up and transplant the new direction from my C:\ drive back to Program Files, though.

Hi Kaoru!

Quite strange your original problem. Right now I have no really idea what might have caused this (If you didn't try some things with the data files. ;) ). Glad to hear however that a re-install was able to resolve it.

About the problems of the missing text. Please reboot your computer first. If the problem persist you can install the missing fonts manually:
In the game directory you can find a subdirectory which contains the fonts used in the game: ...\ACW\Fonts\. Please copy the files to your Windows fonts directory (WINDOWS\Fonts\) or register the fonts via the Windows Control Panel. Restart your computer. After this check if the fonts are now correctly displayed.

About the events: You can't trigger events directly in the game. However you can write events without a condition, so they will trigger in all cases if you resolve a turn. You can also edit the event-files without leaving the ongoing game, the file is read every turn.

Cheers
Norbert

Wow. Did you hear that? That's the sound of my jaw dropping. A game where you don't even need to exit out of your current scenario to modify events and other factors that aren't set at game-start? I was already in love with AACW (Even in the crippled form I was playing it in!), but with it fully functional now, and with this new information, and all else that I'm sure I'll learn... I may just have to elope with your fine young creation. Hopefully, Athena will bless our vows. :neener:

Oh, and on the note of fonts: I'm sure they'll work, whether I need to reboot or just install them manually, but you may be pleased or displeased to know that, right now, I'm having so much fun with AACW that taking time to reboot while I'm awake and could be playing this game, feels like sacrilege!... That is all. :P Thanks again! Wow, I never expected such high-quality help from such awesome folks...

Grateful and exultant,
~Kaoru

I am happy to hear that you enjoy the game. :)

Once you start to create your own events or modifications don't hesitate to post in the mod-forum if you need help. :cwboy:

[color="Blue"]Indeed (though it seems to have gotten a fair share of attention by itself already) :)
