E-mail trouble

Mon Sep 08, 2008 7:18 am

I have been plying AACW some time now by email, and though it is cumbersome, it works.

I just started a new game against Patryn8, and I ran into some new troubles.

I host the game (US side). Send hm the first turn. He sends back a file where the <space> in the name is replaced by <_>. (Patryn vs Bertram becomes Patryn_vs_Bertram). My engine could not read the file, and it was suspicious short (31k).

Mailing back and forth Patryn wrote that the underscores were added and the turn was compressed by the game. Replacing the underscores with spaces made it possible to run the game.

Now I got another turn back, and even replacing the underscores wont make my game recognize the turn.

Are we on different versions? (I am on version 1.11 for this game, freshly installed on a seperate directory) Whats wrong?

File sending it seems. You would be better to use the file compression in-game feature. Perhaps his mailer program change spaces to underscores also.

I havent noticed a file compressing in game feature yet...

I use the PBEM procedure as described in the manual, save the game, dont run it, and then send the save game trn or ord (depending on the hosting) to the opponent... Those files are not compressed (they are between 1-2 MB and 300-400 KB resp, and compress about 10 times with winzip).

There is a new, better, procedure?

Yes, in the Options window, you get in one of the tab 'enable turn compression'

Thanks for the quick responses...I'll try the option later (it is working in my other email game - never fix something that isnt broken :) )
