Nicknamed "Old Blizzards" after yelling "Give them Blizzards boys, give them Blizzards" while directing his command's fire.

Promoted to Major-General Feb 15th, 1862 and given command of the Army of Southwestern Virginia. Transfered to Vicksburg after a dispute with Stonewall Jackson. He later served in the Atlanta campaign and Hood's Invasion of Tennessee. He ended the War with Johnston in the Carolinas.
