MINTY, Robert Horatio George, soldier, born in County Mayo, Ireland, 4 December, 1831. He entered the British army as ensign in 1849, and served in the West Indies and Honduras and on the African coast, but retired from the service in 1853, and, coming to the United States, settled in Michigan. He became major of the 2d Michigan cavalry and then lieutenant-colonel of the 3d at the beginning of the civil war, was made colonel of the 4th in 1862, and in 1863-'5 commanded a cavalry brigade that was known as the "Sabre brigade," capturing Shelbyville, Tennessee, on 27 June. 1863. He commanded the cavalry on the left at Chickamauga, and afterward covered General Thomas's retreat to Chattanooga. He also did good service at New Madrid, Farmington, the pursuit of Bragg, Stone River, and the Atlanta campaign, and led a division in Kilpatrick's raid around that city. At the close of the war he received the brevets of brigadier-general and major-general of volunteers, and declined a major's commission in the regular army. Five horses were killed under him during the war.

Did not find much about him, I would definitely lower him
Dunno about the traits, help please.

(for picture- about halfway down on the screen...the only portrait on the page)

On January 31, 1863, Colonel Robert G. Minty was in command of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, composed of the 4th U.S., 400 men, 2nd Tennessee, 200 men, and 3rd Tennessee 40 men. In a skirmish at Middleton, on that date, the 2nd Tennessee captured Major DeWitt C. Douglass, one captain, one lieutenant and 41 men from Douglass' Battalion, Confederate Cavalry.

Seemed to have performed admirably at Chickamauga in Sept of 63... Commanded approx 1000 cavalrymen, and was assigned to defend key bridge on the Union flank. Eventually driven back, but allowed the Union enough time to protect its flank.

I could see giving him a strat of 4 based upon his realization of the importance of the bridges, and actions defending them.... see (http://www.historynet.com/historical_conflicts/3036971.html?page=2&c=y). Otherwise, I'd say a 1 or 2 for att and a 2 def. Not much to work with...
