An excellant administrator, Canby was sometimes criticized for being an unaggressive field commander. Campaigned against the Navajo in 1860 and turned back the confederate invasion of New Mexico in 1862. Took charge of New York in july 1863 after the draft riots and restored order. He worked as an assistant to the secretary of war from nov 1863 until he was promoted to major general and given command of the Military District of Western Missisippi in may 1864. Captured Mobile in april 1865 and accepted the surrender of Richard Taylor and Kirby Smith in may. He should be available as a corps and army commander. He commanded 50,000 men in the mobile campaign.
