Promotions

Tue Dec 18, 2007 6:12 pm

I have two questions on promotions:

1. It seems that I have to remove a General from his division to promote him. If I then press the promotion button and then reattach the elements of his division he does not get promoted. Therefore, I have to leave a general unattached from his division brigades to receive promotion. This means that I have to pay the "price" to reestablish his divison on the new turn. Is this the only way of accomplishing a promotion?

2. Can you promote more than one general per turn? As long as you have promotable generals is there any limit?

As of 1) that's true, unfortunately. General to be promoted must be unattached from stack if not in command and if he's a div commander then yes, u must disband then promote, wait for promotion then eventually rebuild the div and repay its costs.

As of 2) yes you can promote as many as the seniority allows (check F1 general roster and those promotable are in red). I am here at point 3) I find me with a 2 star general i'm sure I have never promoted...

It just doesn't make sense to me that you should have to detach a division to promote the General. This means that I cannot move that force until the next turn (unless I want to subject it to the penalties, being attacked without a leader, etc.).

Why set it up this way? Can it be changed?

Generals were promoted on the battlefield throughout the war and this seldom caused a disruption in their command.

Yes. I didn't promote him that's for sure, and I found myself with this general who's now 2 stars and i immediately gave him a corps to command. (GW Smith)

Some generals are promoted by event to reflect political decisions.

I'm not so sure. I believe in my last game, 1.07i, that I could promote * to ** as long as I took the division out of the corps into a tab by itself. Then I could promote without disbanding. Plus I could then put the division back into the corps immediately with no problems.

Does this not work for you?

He's most likely been deceived by the promotion graphics missing...as long as the div leader is the stack leader he can be promoted without separating him from the div, however the graph * will not change to a ** (it will only be updated in the element panel, that is).

There should be such a message in the log. The promotion from * to ** is a critical event as it allows you to deploy a new corps in battle. :grr:

I completely agree, as it is only by accident that you learn of the promotion.
