promoting generals?

Hello all, i wonder if there isnt another way to promote a general that is part of a corps or inside an army stack other than put him out of that stack?

I wanted to promote Mansfield but he was attached to a corps. I had to put his division as a solitary force(with all the according -cp's), out of the corps in order to promote him and had him there for 1 turn just to reput him in his old corps.
