Lee has just been freed for me to use him. If I promote him to the head of the Army (over Beaurguard) I will loose 10 Moral points and a bunch of victory points.
How do you usually go about promoting Lee?

Regardless of what the unit is currently called, it takes its name from a list of names based primarily on geographic region, then priority in the list (i.e., if you have two armies based in one region, the first one in the list is organized first).
For example, you have the existing Army of Northern Virginia army out East (Union). If you disband the army, and create a new one, you will find that you now have the Army of the Potomac. Create another army, and you will get the Army of Virginia out East (Pope's command).
What the army is called now does not mean that it is designed to be that name forever, just like division leader names is contingent on the leader, the army name is contingent on geography.
Yes, the historic thing to do is to remove Beauregard from command, send him out west, and replace him with Johnston in the East, then Lee takes command.

I split McDowell from the ANV and combined him with a new HQ creating the AoP. The ANV HQ I sent to Fremont in MO. When it arrived, Fremont and the ANV HQ created the Army of the SouthWest.
Nial wrote:*shakes head* Thats not what happened. I disconnected the HQ from Beauregard, then reconnected same HQ in Scott MO. And it was still called AoP. *Chuckles* I have at this point spent over 1500 VP reconnecting the same HQ, to try different things.
Will try attaching AoP HQ to different general next. Though 3-stars are not easily come by in 62.
