Roaming independant Units

Mon Jun 18, 2007 1:39 am

Playing as the Union (1.4a and 1.4 div Hqs) there seems to be a lot of CSA single marauding units up setting my rail system. Its almost a full time job repairing rail lines. Was this historical? Should raiding CSA units be as far North as the Canadian border?

Yes and no. Some of the most interesting battles and campaigns of the war were Confederate cavalry raids behind Union lines destroying supply depots, ripping up railroad tracks, and causing havoc. However, with a couple notable exceptions, these raids were conducted in almost entirely Confederate territory held by Union forces. So, when you wake up one morning to find 6 confederate cavalry regiments ripping up every rail line in Indiana and Ohio, that is not historical.

thanks for the reply. I think attacks need to toned down a little up there in the lakes area, pure logistics wouldn't allow even small raiding units that far north. Whats the time in horse travel time for a bunch of raiders to travel from the southern state borders to Indiana, 1,2 or 3 weeks or longer? especially a return trip.

Well, there was an attack on Maine... Not like it was a regular thing though. :)

I don't think these attacks should be toned down : raiding deep in ennemy territory means the cavalry unit will lose cohesion fast, it is up to you to engage it with your own cavalry and to destroy it once it is weakened... It forces you to keep assets on your rear, which is IMO good.

This can't happen if you maintain the same vigileance and number of troops the Union had too keep historically to prevent wide spread raids.
