capturing non-operational ships

Sun May 27, 2007 7:59 pm

In a pbem I was able to defeat a small garrison and capture New Albany, IN with a cavalry raid. Much to my delight there was a river ironclad there which I also captured. Unfortunately it was 20+ days until it would become operational, and I obviously couldn't stick around for that. So I destroyed the railroad and scurried back into KY before the inevitable pursuit from the USA. But I had to leave that nice ship behind.

Question about a feature for the distant future: should/could we be allowed to destroy a captured ship in a case like this much the same way we can destroy a depot or RR? I imagine it might be a coding nightmare (thus the "distant" part ;) ) but realistically it seems like a viable historical option to me. It sure would have made it more enjoyable in this case to take that city!

BTW, what about situation like the one I had in York. Captured the city, ordered to destroy the depot (message says it takes 5 days), so I also move the cav to adjacent region( why leave them for extra 10 days in York, Union will attack for sure) and voila. My unit moved but the depot was INTACT! Do I have to remain in the region after having destroyed a depot?
