Dots

Tue May 15, 2007 6:29 pm

The manual says (p.15) that each dot on a city's base represents three "units." Green means land units; blue means naval. I have some questions about this.

1. If I see a yellow dot, I take it that represents two units? And red represents one?

2. Also, I assume this convention holds for units "pedestals" too? I'm playing the Union, and I was trying to figure out what was wrong with my two-ship stack that was forced out of Norfolk on the second turn of the grand campaign, because it had a yellow dot on its pedestal. That represents purely numbers of "units" present -- not element loss, supply status, poor morale/cohesion, or anything else, right?

3. It would seem to be a bit dangerous to rely on "dots" as an indicator of an enemy unit's power, since any single "unit" can vary dramatically in power. But then again, I'm not entirely sure what qualifies as a "unit" for the purposes of dots. (Yes, I've read the definition of "unit" at p. 18 of the manual, but I don't understand how this relates to dots.) Do supply wagons count? Is a division a "unit"? Is a corps a single "unit"?

Many thanks in advance.

By counting units, its kind of FOW and not very accurate.

I wish it counted elements instead. Right now, it could be three divisions or three leader units.

Hi

I´m pretty sure color of the dots does not represent number or units (less than 3).
It represents units with some kind of "problem": less strength/cohesion/supply than they should.
As usual, yellow is a little bad, orange bad and red VERY BAD.

I agree that it would be more useful if dots represented the real strength of the stack (power points maybe) instead of units.

A Corps with 4 Divisions will have far less dots (2-3 dots) than a corps with the same units atached directly to the commander (9 dots).

Means nothing with respect to combat power. Not a good thing I think, as most player will make that association automatically.
