Lake Michigan Naval Units

How do I get Porter and the Cairo put of the Great Lakes. I am playing the july start CG. I saw the answer somewhere in the forum, but I can not seem to find it now.

there is a passage thru Erie Canal, simply drop the unit on a river in TN, and it will find his way
