Another ah-ha moment

Wed Apr 11, 2007 1:23 pm

Last night, I was reading about Grant's offensive in 1864 and the various frontal assaults he tried, how they all ended very bloodily for him, because Lee's army was so adept at quickly digging trenches and throwing up earthworks.

This made me think about the part in the manual that says that opposing armies can both occupy the same region and entrench, as long as neither is in an offensive posture. But once one switches to offensive posture, it will lose it's entrenched bonus and will attack the other army.

This sounds like it will perfectly model what I was reading about. It really sounds like the game is going to realistically model the power of the defense that became prevelant as the war went on and really penalize frontal assaults against entrenched troops.

The book I was reading also talked about how, at the same time, Sherman began his march to Atlanta. Sherman talked about how he wasn't afraid to move part of his army behind the enemy's rear because he said that he was confident that the detachment could defend itself against a foe 3 times it's size.

Again, I could see this happening in the game, splitting off a detachment, loading it with supplies, sending it around to threaten an enemy's rear and either forcing the enemy to attack it or retreat.

To you beta testers, does the game seem to model history in this way?

As you can tell, I've got AACW on the brain!
