Welcome to the wild and wacky world of Amewican Ciwil Waw

First off on a major side note, never
ever ever ever ever ever ever ever try to invade into a region held by entrenched enemy units with artillery. They will slaughter your invading force on the beaches
literally and generally make for a bad day

. Never ever

.
Now to your invasion. I think we need some more information to understand what's happening. Are the two fleet fighting a battle each turn? Just having an enemy fleet in Defensive Posture in the same water region as your invasion fleet will have no affect. Both fleets will simply eye each other leerily and your invading forces will land while waving merrily.
If however the fleets are fighting even if you win the battle your invasion will be disrupted and your force will not land. However each turn that this happens the number of days that your invading force needs to land will be reduced by 1 (this is my observation) and they will eventually win the battle against the clock. Additionally, if the defending fleet is loosing each time they will most likely have to re-sail into the region and find your fleet all over again, which gives you a little extra time.
Soooo, Captain Orso, just to be clear, you advise always risking a headlong amphibious invasion against entrenched artillery. Got it.
Thanks, this is helpful stuff. Yes, there was some fighting at sea, so that must explain the stalled disembarkation. Shoulda been obvious to me, but I think I missed the first round of ship-to-ship action, or simply failed to pay it proper attention, and so failed to realize that it was causing the problem. He has the Virginia prowling around, and I have two separate squadrons, the invasion fleet (heavily armed) and a smaller squadron with the Monitor, all in the same water. Somehow in all of that my laser-like focus on getting the troops ashore kept me from properly understanding the bigger picture.
BTW, thanks for all the welcomes. But full disclosure: I used to be known as Rexor. I've had to change identities due to a chronic inability to resuscitate my old account in the wake of the infamous AGEOD hacking incident. No big deal, as I like the moniker "Linstock" better. Just look at Linstock as the reanimated corpse of Rexor. Unless it keeps you up at night or something.
