Combining captured elements

Fri Mar 05, 2010 2:06 am

It is April 1862 in my first PBEM which is the Coming Fury campaign and I am wondering about two related things:

1)I am assuming that I can combine a captured USA supply element into my damaged CSA supply unit that is missing one of its own elements. If you know this to be a false assumption, please let me know.

2)If this works, will it still be considered as a foreign element and unable to be brought up to full strength with supply train replacement chit replacements? Thanks in advance for any info.

My belief is based on how the database works in regard to missing elements. Missing elements have to specifically match the type of model that is missing from a defined unit in order to be combined and I don't think captured elements are redefined to be of those exact specific original models so you have to use them in a standalone usage without being able to combine them into your own friendly units.

I understand. Thanks a tremendous amount because I was about to march the two units pretty much the entire length of the map in order to (attempt to) combine them. I normally try to answer my questions with the forum search function(which I tried), or with play testing in experimental games. But, as you might imagine, this specific scenario is pretty hard to get together. And, experimenting within a PBEM might just lose me the game and certainly will bore my opponent while waiting for my results.

On a related note, just to be sure that I have this assumption correct, I could combine captured enemy elements with each other???(ie. 2 USA supply elements and another 2 USA supply elements)

It has already occurred, hence the question and the associated .jpg screen shot capture.
Unfortunately, I do not know where to send the game files and your account seems to be blocking my PM that I tried to send. Could you please point me to a thread that explains how to send you game files?
Oh yeah, one more thing, I am not the host if that makes any difference.

My suspicion is that the captured unit will be redefined as a USA/CSA unit of your side but internally made up of the original side's element (model) names making them uncombinable. I had never thought to ask Pocus how this works until now.

Okay, darn. No problem though. I'm sure that I'll find a use for the lone supply element. In fact, it's kind of cool in that it's so small, and only 3 weight units, that I can much more easily transport it. I am already concocting strategies to take advantage of this...

May I also assume that what you point out would apply to foreign units under your control, that they would not be combinable with your units, or each other?

1)The answer seems to be yes, at least as far as my game testing has gone. See the attached .jpg which shows Longstreet's brigade which is in its original condition, missing a field artillery. Note that in the second .jpg it has absorbed the captured enemy 12 pounder gun.(this isn't the exact situation posed in the question, but should apply)
2)still unanswered

Since I didn't build that brigade, I have yet to test your point.
As for posting the game files. My PBEM partner/host may not want to divulge any info on our game. So, let me work on some other test games and see what happens. In any event, thanks for the attention to my question.

OK, I've played and tested a little farther and have come to the conclusion that captured elements can be combined(at least with your own units). It took me days to figure out and set up the details, but I did march the lone, captured supply wagon across the country and it DID combine with my damaged 3-element supply unit.(see attached .jpg)

Please note, even though I have shown that it can be done, I am still not sure if it is a good strategy since I don't know if it will be able to accept repair/replacements through the replacement chit system. In other words, you may be stuck dragging around a still depleted, irreparable, and vulnerable element.

Yes, but this way it's another supply replacement you don't feel compelled to buy.

That is true and very important to me since I am playing as the CSA and never have enough resources to implement all of my strategies. Those supply wagon replacements are definitely a large expense that I would like avoid if possible, or as long as possible.

Another use that did not occur to me until now is that I could use the now full 4 element supply unit to build a depot.

Right on, okay, try this file(s). In case I am supposed to give you info too, check out Longstreet's brigade and the captured artillery under Jackson's command laying siege to Ft. Monroe. They will combine.

Did I get the files uploaded correctly and were you able to examine the captured gun to see what is going on 'under the hood?' Any insights?
