New Units - How best to recruit?

Wed Aug 19, 2009 7:27 pm

Is there a particular way (and reason) veteran gamers order new units?

Ie. would I be better off ordering separate infantry units, then adding a separate calvary unit, then adding an artillery unit--rather than first getting the one new unit with all of those elements included in it?

It depends on the situation for me, but because of the scarcity of pure infantry brigades, I will usually buy the 2 inf 1 cav brigades for my cav. Cannons is where I get my real diversity. As the North, I typically buy my artillery separate because I like to get a lot of 10lbers and they don't come with any brigades. As the South, I prefer 6lbers and 12lbers so I'll buy the big brigades with attached cavalry and artillery.

It also really helps to recruit in divisions so you can figure out if you have all the elements you need for your division.

In my experience, as the North you'll eventually run out of "pure" infantry brigades anyway, and then sometimes what's left won't easily combine into decent divisions, so next time I'd probably start using the "combined" stuff right away wherever I can and only top up with "pure" brigades when the desired division configuration doesn't work any other way.

It very rarely works out as you plan it. Not even against AI which can sometimes pull a surprise on you so you have to react to changing circumstances. I know that a lot of us like to try and fill out our divisions according to the 12 inf 1 sharps 1 cav 4 art balance but in reality that just does not happen - certainly not in PvP game.

I often end up with divisions with more than 1 sharps and more than 1 cav especially when I have to throw togther divisions in a hurry. I always feel as if I have a shortage of pure infantry as CSA but then I have had my nephew complain about the same shortgae when he plays yanks.

Although with Alexander and Gardner for instance I will throw togther divisions with the best 4 art that the south can build at time and top them up with sharps/irregulars.

With JEB Stuart and NB Forrest I will put togther diviosions of purely horse art and cav and no ifantry or sharps at all. But even horse art I run out of in the end! But it is fun puting togther those divisions when I can.
