Once an element takes a hit it has to check its discipline every hour it remains in the battle. If it fails the test the unit becomes shaken and has its rate of fire decreased for the current round! ( and of course it has to check again next hour even if not hit again).
In addition, an element that is hit during fire combat must make a check based on its current cohesion. If it fails this check, it is routed off the field. Further- when the number of routed units becomes too large, the whole force is routed and must withdraw, suffering possible extra losses while retreating.
Also discipline is one of the factors on a long list of 13 influences that affects an element's chance of successfully firing.
So your unit with a discipline of ten should have a greater chance of maintaining its rate of fire if it is hit, and have a greater chance of firing.
NB: the other factors on the list:
discipline,
experience level,
leader's off/def rating,
cover,
weather,
leader's special abilililililities,
command penalties,
lack of ammo and or general supply
friendly supply wagon 10%,
river crossing,
forced march,
passive posture,
trench levels above five for art only
