Oh when will this game end?

Fri Aug 01, 2008 7:37 pm

My first game.

Right now I have something like 168 NM and over 3000 VPs (I earn 80+VPs to the Rebs 4+- a turn, don't know the exact totals). Its Sept. '64 and I own everything east, north and west of Texas except Tallahassee. Marse Robert is holed up like a rat in a fort outside Mobile with about 12,000 men. Grant and Meade are putting the clamps on these final two spots. Plus I've occupied virtually all of the Rebel towns and cities I've marched through.

Given what you know from above, how much longer do you think this game will go on?

Forever.

Seriously though, VP have nothing to do with the victory screen, and you can't earn enough NM from 12K guys to put you over the top. In two turns it's all over but the screaming, wailing, and gnashing of teeth, but you won't get a message saying so.

That does beg a question, what do VPs have to do with winning?

Boasting rights, and making money to buy the stuff that helps you win.

If there's a time-ending it defaults to vps.

Ah hah! So the expenditure of firing generals, or other events, brings down the VPs while taxing is based on the total VPs so I get more money.

DING! :bonk: :bonk: :bonk:

This situation is common unfortunately. In '64 war weariness starts taking NM from both sides, but gets negated by morale resiliency that adds +1NM/turn for the side who has <100 NM, so the losing side (rebs in this example) will stay or even increase NM while the winning side gets whittled down and doesnt get a chance to claim a NM victory.
I would argue that defeat thresholds should be tweaked(continuously increase) starting in '65, so as to force losing sides to action to stem a NM defeat. The threshold could be increased +1/turn to a max of 60-70 for example so an even match/slugfest could and should goto the end with a VP decision.
Another option is to dispose of morale resiliency if your side doesnt have a certain amount of objective/stategic cities. My thinking is that holding few obj/strat cities (or capital) should impact whether they get a resiliency boost, or else what is their resiliency really based on?? In this example, Lee holed-up and Texas alone continues to 'inspire the CSA cause'??

There is room for improvement on this issue somewhere,

John

Tweaking the defeat threshhold sounds good to me. Going with that option, the armies could continue effective fighting until the civilian government gave up. Raising it by one per turn starting in Jan '64 would bring it up to 68 by Dec '65.

Not yet. I stopped playing that campaign though, the only thing left of the Confederacy is Texas. They can have it. :sourcil:

What, do you normally shoot ducks tied to a log? :8o: I'm ready to be humbled.

I've been playing the Rebs for the first few turns to see their capabilities. That way I won't be surprised when you send 50,000 Rebs storming DC in early July.

LOL! I am far from a seasoned vet, trust me. I have yet to even see a victory screen -- and am barely more experienced than you, believe it or not.

Anyway, you know where to find me. :)
