Why am I buying boats?

I understand that the brigs are used to rake in cash by running through the blockade, but what is the point of brown water boats?

To block the enemy of doing river movements or supply.

Ironclads are very good for keeping Feds out of Mississippi at least for a while.Dont think in East it is such a gainer though as Virginia really needs those infantry regts. But out west - lose the Mississippi and you lose the war?
