Noob question - Strength values

Tue Apr 08, 2008 6:20 am

I'm not even sure where to search in the forum for something related to this - so here goes:

I am having a hard time coming to understand all the numeric values in the game in relation to what the maximum for each can be. For example, the strategic, offensive, and defensive numbers of a general. Let's say they are 3-2-2. What does this mean? Sure, it means he's better than a 1-1-0 in a relative sense, but what does it mean in absolute sense? Are the maximum values 5-5-5, 7-7-7, etc.? Without comparing him to anyone else, how can I tell if these number indicate a good general or a poor one?

Same for detect values: By land: 3, By sea: 2. What do these mean? What's the maximum value for these? This is the same issue I have with many of the values in the game.

Am I approaching this all wrong? Any advice is appreciated.

Hi!

There is no set maximum for leaders ratings.
But the max standard number one can have is 6 in each (that will be a totally awesome leader, better than Lee and Grant).
Still, this “perfect” 6-6-6 leader can be improve further by the effects of good army leaders (which give bonuses to subordinates corps leaders) and experience (each star give +1 to either defence or offence, alternatively).
So it’s possible to find, under very favourable circumstances, a 7-8-10 or so leader.
Still, this is exceptional.
To know if a leader is good or bad, consider that the standard is a 3-1-1.
Bellow that he will be bad although it depend on the use you give him and the special abilities he have. A 2-0-3 used just to defend a static position can be quite good. Or a 5-0-0 can be very useful for mobile detachments like raiding parties who will try to evade combat. The CSA leader Huger for example is very poor (2-0-1 I think) but he have the “artillerist” ability so you can put him in a stack with other leader in command and he will give a 20% bones to all your artillery units on the stack
Above 3-1-1 he is a good one, unless he have some very bad abilities.
In case you don’t know, the strategic rating is used for activation. Each turn each leader “rolls” a 6 sided dice and if he gets the same or lower that his strategic ability he activates.
So a standard 3-1-1 leader activates 50% of the time.
Deff and off values give +5% to the strength of the commanded units in defence or offence if he is the leader of the stack and +3% in he is the leader of a division/brigade.

About detection ratings, if i´m not wrong i think the maximum is 5 (spies, cavalry, balloons…). On sea, i think the best is 4 for frigates.
Hope it helps
Regards!

Well there are no maximum values... Value goes on upgrading with experience.

Best general stats are -> Lee 6-5-5, but there is in theory posible to see a 7-10-1:niark: (and even greater!) using some options, depending on the rank assigned and gaining experience.

Also, all those values give different bonuses in different situations.

For instance a 3-1-1 leader gives +5% combat bonus to all troops if leading a CORPS, but just a +3% to his division if leader DIVISION.

You should read the Wiki to a fast general understanding... as there are lots of small details here.

I know what the leader stats are for, and I know that they change in (I think) two ways:

a) when a leader is promoted or moved to a different command, the stats are altered: e.g. Gen Jim starts as a 4-2-1 one-star (maj gen?), but on promotion to two-star (lt gen?) he drops to 3-1-0.

b) the battle screen will often show the commander's stats as different from how they were represented on his counter at the beginning of a turn. e.g. Gen Bob is rated 4-4-2 when I click the turn button, but when in the ensuing battle the screen shows his ratings as 3-1-1.

What I don't know is the parameters of these fluctuations - what rules if any govern them? Are the promotion-related changes buried in the data files? If you play with randomization, are they tied to the original stats somehow? Are the battle-related changes only a reflection of command limit or terrain or something else?

(sorry to resurrect an old thread, but of all the threads my searches turned up this one seemed most relevant to my questions)

Sorry I can't answer your questions -- but I'll give your post a bump

Have you looked at the ACW_Leaders_List pdf file that comes with the game? Look in your main AACW directory, or maybe there's a Docs subdirectory. This pdf lists all of the leaders in the game, where and when they arrive, all their stats and abilities, and how those stats change when you promote them. The file is not current -- there are some errors -- but it's pretty close.

I have no idea about why the leader stats might be different in the battle screen - I've never noticed that. Maybe you went to battle with a leader that had just been given divisional command or was "teleported" and had a temporary penalty to stats?
