Best setup for PBEM campaign?

Thu Mar 13, 2008 1:07 pm

My apologies up front; I haven't played AACW at all since the summer of 2007, or was it 2006, even? Anyway, when the game came out.

Now I want to start a full war campaign PBEM. I have noticed that there appears to be a number of different scenarios and mods out there by now. What is generally considered the best setup for a competitive PBEM? Which scenario, and should I use any of the available mods? Any advice for someone quite out of the loop for some time would be appreciated. :)

I ve just played a couple PBEM games so dont count on me too much.

I ve played vanilla 1.09 once -> turn 40 ... just got 2 problems, too much troops to fit into just 24 divisions, and too low on 2* commanders.. Very interesting game, I gave up due to various operational mistakes

vanilla 1.09 + low leader randomization + hard activation rule ... All the others in the default mode
just played a few turns... too much problems with activation... I believe it is limiting too much.
low randomization gives +/-1 to all stats ... it is interesting and adds some flavour. I liked it so repeated this into a 3rd game

vanilla 1.09 + low leader random..
playing now around 12 turns very happy with the random idea, well my 2 initial 3* started with strat 3, but there are lots of other positive results!

Official 1.09d Adds some extras, solving some of my "faults" but perhaps you should read Runyan99 leader mod. It solves all "faults" I ve had in my games... but still not tried for it!

There is a PBEM mod that supposedly tweaks things to be more suitable for PBEM play, but I have no experience with it myself, so I can't really recommend it (though I suggest checking it out :) )

there is several mods that modify some data in the game... like the general mod that gives an alternative to the official rating to the generals, some modders have created PBEM mod for their games with many modification...
I suggest you to read the presentation of the mod before experimenting them vs AI and only then you can choose a mod that is allready created...
The other way is to devellop your own mod but it requires more time

Is there a consensus on which attrition model is best for PBEM? The "historical" version sounds, well ... more historical :) , but maybe it does make the game rather less fun to play? My prospective Reb opponent suggests to use the standard attrition rules, and he has more experience than I. Just wondering what others thought? Thanks. :)

I would let AGEod do a 1.09rc or 1.10 version before calling "historical attrition" fun and/or historical. Right now it is just tough.

There is a lot of experimentation and testing going on with it. I think it is still in the "good idea" stage. From what I have been reading I expect it will be very well implemented in a new version.
