Locating new units

Mon Dec 10, 2007 7:05 pm

Hi,

I need a hint about how to locate new units on map after a turn. The newspaper has an entry for all new units, but the unit names aren't clickable, so one has to close the newspaper and look for the unit manually, then open the newspaper again etc...is there an easier way to do this?

Every turn, cycle through all of your idle units using the E and R keys.

You can cycle with "e/r" keys through all units, but beware, only units ready to be issued orders show up, not newly build units that are still forming (on the map. but still in basic training or, in case of ships, outfitting), which, for most unit types except militia, takes more than one turn...

I really wish there were two different sentry commands. We need one for long term garrisons and one for skip turn.

Another wish*... Generals can not be easily searched for....

not sure but also seems to me -> in case you put a General in a "blocked stack" it desappears from the E/R/T/Y search system....

I cant sort my generals by "stats" - STRAT/OFF/DEFF, once given some command (division-corps -army) the stat sorted is the power of the troops they command.

Perhaps some key could be added to follow Generals

*BUT --- the Game-style (the same was in BoA) makes me feel as if i can not control really all the situation... and this is good, seems a little fog of war is in your own side (AS really is in real life in every aspect)... :indien:

I think you can do those things in the roster menu. Click the star on the left to show only generals. On the general listing, click any variable and the list sorts according to that variable (seniority, strategic, attack...)

Perhaps I am missing something about the roster, but... once assigned troops I can not see the general stats, only power of the division / group.

I can look only into unassigned generals

Yes this is true. Division generals' stats are masked in the roster. Corps and Army generals' stats are presented.

yeah, would be nice if you could click on the newspaper report for individual units that have just been raised, for those of us outside of the US getting used to the local geography is a bit of a steep learning curve :)

After a while, and especially if you don't play with stats randomized, you remember those stats...yes it would be better if you could still see them but at least the ledger allows you to locate the div and check for the general stats in 2 clicks. ;)

It's wonderful after 6 months of playing my U.S. geography knowledge has largely improved. Arriving at the late years of the war, i now for example realized why VA and WV were separated by ageod...that's bc Lincoln called WV as a separate state. Us europeans have lots to learn also on the history of that period not just on geography.

Too bad i don't own Harper's Ferry (and probably i never will risk an attack there) i'd love to apply martial law there!

BTW region/settlement and even rr links are so damn accurate in AACW...Gray's done a big piece of an "italian job" as we'd say here. Most accurate in game of this kind...well AACW is a masterpiece excelling in several categories. Accuracy is but one of them. :)

This game is a geographical masterclass. I live in the UK, have visited America a number of times and have studied the ACW, but this game has helped me to understand the war and the country in new ways.

10/10!

I'm an American (and a Southerner to boot!) and even I think it would be great to be able to click on the newspaper report and go to the unit location.

It is on my top most to do list, which is these days postip #356 sticked near my chewing-gum reserve (between the mint box and the citron-flavored one).

More details? Sorry it would start to be disturbing for mentally healthy people :)

Yes I agree with the ideas. In my opinion the game is perfect unless the fact that searching units especially the new ones is a bit boring. I must say "where the hell is that damned unit!" ten times a turn.
Maybe adding the colour of the region with its tag next to the units in the roster could also help.

When I first played I just took it for granted that clicking on a new unit in the newspaper would take you to it. I would also like to be able to click and hold unit, force or especially leaders and be able to use e/r key.

Oh... and how about "Training of [unit name] is nearly finished"? Perhaps keep that message but also add a "Training of [unit name] is finished" message when cohesion is full.

That and name-clicking in the newspapers (which cannot be done) are the 2 things I really look forward to. But the game would be great without them too.

Rally point for new units

Great idea - this is the one part of the game that is REALLY annoying to me (hunting for my new units). Might I suggest an automatic rally point? Newly raised units could be ordered to travel of their own accord from their city of origin to a central rallying point or camp where you can collect and merge them into divisions or corps. It would save me lots of administrative time, and let me focus on the fun! (and make it an optional feature so you can choose to ignore or use it.)

This feature was used in the Total War series (Rome, Medieval, etc), and I am not comparing the 2 games...

I vote for a "training..." filter/own display/list/pop up/banner/email "thing"...hunting down newly trained units is somewhat painfull in an otherwise almost perfect interface (seriously, the best UI I´ve seen in a long way, there should be an award for this)

Rally point could be usefull, but it would have to include train/river transport options...and what happens if there are no resources available?

Disregarding the auto-rally point as those units are not entirely ready when they truly are and even when they are, they are just green and the log says: almost finished....there's not definitely the need for some extra erty scrolling to go down in particular to all sieges, all besieged, all out of supply etc etc. It would help but there's a countersolution. :)

We truly need to erty anyway... but it would be very useful nonetheless. When you have priorities you can find them and order before you order the solution to move somewhere else (oops i had forgotten...uff now where did i send that unit?).

To play the role of Devil's Advocate for a second;

It's not that I don't like the idea of an auto-rally feature, but how should it work? One rally point per theatre? One per state? One per city? Should units moving to rally point use rail or river movement? Always? Or just in certain situations? Which posture should they use while moving? Which should they assume on reaching the rally point? Should they move all-out, no matter the cohesion cost?

(Not saying it can't be done, just that there are quite a few things that need to be though out before anyone can start thinking of implementing it :) )

This old goat says:
1. Left click on a town or city, have an option come up that says "Set rally point".
2. Right click on a selected point on the map and verify that as your rally point for that town or city. It has to be friendly territory, in supply, etc.
3. Unit wayfinding is an issue: do they walk? take rail or river transport? Give the player the choice: cities far from the front may want to rail them in; closer cities could send them on foot.
4. The number of rally points does not matter - set one for each city, or one big gathering point per theatre. It's all up to the player. Once they arrive at the rally point they can be ordered as usual.

The goal is to remove this one minor interface issue, and it sounds like I'm not the only one who would like to see a better solution to e/r/t/y. By making it an option then people who don't like it don't have to use it.

This is a lot of work though, but perhaps more filter can be added at a lower cost. What are the ones most needed for you?

Finding the recruited units

Tue Jan 15, 2008 2:38 pm

I go for a solution where there is a menu choise in the ledger for "newly recruited units". That would make my day, and then I want them sorted as ready for action and "movable", and ready but "not movable".
From my prospective, just a gamer that is, it sounds complicated to make a rally point for each state also considering the chance of being intercepted by enemy cavalry, and all other factors related to rivers and rails and roads. I want to order them myself and have them under control. :cwboy:
